The white label operator TGP Europe which currently has in place numerous sponsorship deals with several Premier League football clubs, including the likes of Newcastle United and Bournemouth, has voluntarily surrendered their UKGC licence, bringing said sponsorship deals into doubt.

The decision to exit the UK marketplace was taken after the Gambling Commission fined the company £3.3m as a result of an investigation carried out finding they had failed to carry out sufficient checks on business partners and breaching anti-money laundering rules

A statement on the UKGC site goes on to state:

TGP’s exit from the GB market means several football clubs now have sponsorship arrangements with unlicensed gambling businesses.

The Commission yesterday contacted AFC Bournemouth, Fulham FC, Newcastle United FC, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Burnley FC warning of the risks of promoting unlicensed gambling websites.

The Commission is seeking assurance from the clubs that they have carried out due diligence on their white label partners and that consumers in Great Britain cannot transact with the unlicensed sites.

Clubs will be asked to demonstrate that they have assurance that any steps to geo-block the sites are effective, recognising that some blocking can be easily by-passed by use of tools such as a Virtual Private Network.

They will be sorely missed from the UK market, not a dry eye in the country.

Will the UKGC make the football clubs give up the sponsorships? I doubt it.
