Poker legend Doyle Brunson dies

The poker legend Doyle Brunson  passed away on Sunday aged 89, with news of his passing being publicised yesterday  on  Monday 15th May 2023.

Brunson who became known as the ‘Godfather of Poker’  was a two time WSOP Main Event winner and was also the first player to win $1m in poker tournaments.

In total he won ten WSOP bracelets during his 50 year plus career playing poker, a record tied with Johnny Chan and Phil Ivey for second all time, placing him behind Phill Helmuth who has won 16.

Brunson was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1988 and was arguably poker’s most recognisable ambassador and character

Brunson’s popularity was such that an online poker room which utilised his name and image was established in 2004, with Doyle’s Room initially starting out on the Tribeca Poker Network, before migrating to Microgaming’s Prima Poker network in 2007.

Brunson who hailed from Texas, died on Sunday in Las Vegas and is  survived by his wife, Louise, and children Todd and Pamela.
