As of March 31, 2026, GambleAware has officially shut down. After two decades of funding treatments, running public awareness campaigns, and supporting research on gambling issues, GambleAware has gone under.
What happens now?
The UK government takes over. More precisely, NHS England, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, and UK Research and Innovation step in.
With GambleAware taking heat for receiving industry donations, it does make sense for the government to take charge of handling gambling harm. Yet, the transition process is still a long way off, and in the meantime, players might not know exactly where to go for help.
Coupled with the major tax changes (Remote Gaming Duty rising from 21% to 40%) and rising inflation, no one is exactly feeling hopeful the way things stand. But let’s sit this one out and see.
