Gambling Review Commission report delayed
With online gamblers still smarting from the decision by
a South African court which has disrupted internet
casino activities in the country (see previous InfoPowa
report), there has been more bad news this week.
Local media report that the Gambling Review Commission
set up to examine South African gambling in general and
make recommendations on online betting has now been
delayed by at least two weeks.
The Commission'€™s
report, which the industry hopes will at last release
liberalising legislation that has been before parliament
for some time, was due for submission at the end of
August, but this week the South African Department of
Trade and Industry policy and legislation director,
Nomfundo Maseti, commented: "It'€™s safe to say that
[the report] will be ready in about two weeks."
Maseti confirmed that the commission was "looking at the
industry holistically, including casinos, online
gambling and horse racing, so as to do a comprehensive
review."
