SAHAMIES COMEBACK
11 September 2009
Finnish online poker ace cleans up on the big
money virtual tables
Ilari 'Ziigmund' Sahamies was back at the high stakes
online poker tables with a vengeance over the weekend,
enjoying a profitable run mainly at the expense of one
of the world's top players, Phil Ivey.
According
to statistics from the independent information site
MarketPulse, Sahamies has prevailed on two consecutive
nights, making close to half a million dollars in tense
heads up encounters with Ivey.
In a clash that
lasted over 187 hands, the Finnish ace ended up $270 000
ahead in the first confrontation, and Ivey's attempt to
recover on the following night at Full Tilt was
abandoned after 97 hands and just over half-an-hour with
Ivey down a further $200 000. The largest pot on Sunday
was worth $165 000, which went to Sahamies.
And
talking about high stakes cash game poker action, the
popular Poker After Dark television program is currently
running its second season in the United States with
audience-pulling names like Sahamies, Ivey, Dwan,
Antonius and Lederer all buying in for $100 000 apiece
for the $200/$400 action. Sahamies's style of aggressive
and often voluble poker, showcased on Poker After Dark
for the first time, will be especially interesting.
Samahies is not new to television, having previously
played on the High Stakes Poker program flighted by GSN
where he did not fare well - all the more reason for a
more focused and truculent approach on PAD.
Poker
fans will have to be nightowls to enjoy the new season,
which runs over five consecutive nights at just after
two in the early morning hours.
