Trade association explains how its members
fight problem gambling
Most of the major UK online gambling companies are
members of the Remote Gaming Association trade body,
which this week marked October 19th as Responsible
Gambling Awareness Day with a practical initiative
communicating the industry's commitment to the
prevention of problem gambling.
The release of a
video on anti-addictive gaming by the RGA coincided with
Gamcare's annual conference. It showed that the industry
is committed to promoting responsible behaviour amongst
customers, industry and employees, and seeks to ensure
that individuals participating in gambling activities
exercise rational and sensible choices in order to guard
against any the development of any problems.
The
five minute video explains the considerable lengths to
which online gambling companies go to protect their
customers, and showcases the methods and technologies
used by Internet casinos in guarding consumer
information, identifying and preventing problem
gambling, helping players to self-diagnose, where to go
for assistance and measures taken to exclude underaged
and potentially compulsive gamblers.
"We hope our
five minute tutorial will provide a quick insight into
how operators ensure that for the vast majority,
gambling remains a safe and harmless leisure activity,”
said Clive Hawkswood, CEO of the RGA.
The RGA
also made a donation on hehalf of its members of over
GBP 10 000 to Gambling Therapy, the world's first
international online help service for compulsive
gambling.
Gerry Sutcliffe, Minister for Sport in
the British government, said, “I am really pleased that
the industry is holding a Responsible Gambling Awareness
Day. This is a fantastic idea and shows how the industry
is taking the initiative in promoting responsible
gambling, and the importance of funding the treatment of
problem gambling.
"I am sure the day will help
raise awareness and spread this message to consumers and
operators, and I hope to see the event return next
year.”
Hawkswood said, “Responsible Gambling
Awareness Day is about reminding everyone involved,
especially customers, about the need to gamble
responsibly; to showcase the industry’s ongoing efforts
in this area and to do our best to ensure that we keep
our gambling safe and enjoyable.”
