IRISH GAMBLING REGULATION WILL BRING SIGNIFICANT
REWARDS
10 October 2008
Operator body says up to 10 000 jobs and Euro 50
million in tax revenues could be generated
With the prospect of Ireland embracing the regulation
and taxation of online and land gambling in place of the
private clubs system currently in place, the Gaming and
Leisure Association of Ireland put some numbers on the
table this week.
The body said that regulation could lead to the creation
of around 3 000 jobs and generate Euro 50 million in tax
revenue for the Exchequer, and that as many as 10 000
jobs could be created if the government establishes
Ireland as a centre for the international online
gambling industry.
The association represents casino operators in Ireland
and claims that regulation of the sector could have huge
benefits for the Irish economy.
A government-appointed committee has already recommended
that land casinos, which currently operate as private
clubs in Ireland, be licensed and supervised by an
independent regulator, anmd a government decision on the
issue is awaited.
