$1.7 MILLION WIN FOR VELA
16 November 2007
World Poker Final decided
Following a closely fought heads up between Nick
Schulman and Mike Vela, the latter was declared winner
of this year's World Poker Finals, taking the $1 704 986
top prize. Schulman had to be content with second
placing and a still-generous $864 652 payday.
First man ousted from the final table in the competition
was Mark Weitzman, who was taken down by former champ
Nenad Medic early in the game.
But it was Mike Vela who dominated much of the action,
taking out Mike White in fifth place and Tom Dwan in
fourth place, and then demolishing Medic himself in
third to set up the heads up against 2005 WPF champion
Schulman. With a significant chip lead it did not take
Vela long to despatch his last opponent. Schulman moved
all-in with pocket fives, and Vela called with A-Q. Vela
flopped two pair, and no miracle card came for Schulman,
who had to settle for second place.
