NO RELIEF FOR RUSSIAN GAMBLING (Update)
8 May 2009
July 1st remains move or close day
The Russian government has no intention of moderating
its draconian ruling that come July 1st 2009 all land
gambling venues will be moved out of main cities and
confined to four pre-identified areas in the country.
The ruling is causing extensive repositioning of
businesses and strategies among Russian Federation land
gambling operators.
The Russian news agency Tass
reported this week that President Dmitry Medvedev
emphasised at a meeting with the chief of the Federal
Tax Service, Mikhail Mokretsov, that the law on the
gambling areas that all casinos should be transferred
later this year will not be revised under any
circumstances.
Medvedev said that at a meeting
with senior activists of the Fair Russia Party earlier
in the day the issue was raised and he'd informed those
present: "As of July 1 all gambling activities will
proceed in a very different fashion. All facilities
outside the designated areas are to be closed. Four
gambling zones are to be created.
“It is
absolutely for certain that these rules are to take
effect in due time. There will be no revision of these
rules or backtracking, however strongly business
entities may be trying to press for such revisions.
That’s the position of the state,” he said.
