BACK OFF, BAVARIA!

Online gambling group wins an important victory in
Germany
A Munich court has hopefully put an end to an 8 month
online gambling ban dispute waged by the Austrian listed
sportsbetting company Bwin Interactive and the German
state of Bavaria, ruling that it is "technically not
possible" to ban online sportsbetting in the state.
The dispute has its genesis in an attempt by the state
of Bavaria to ban online sportsbetting last September,
claiming that only its own Bayern Lotto state lottery
monopoly was legal gambling in the region. The ban was
contested by Bwin.
Last week the Munich court ruled that it was not
technically possible for Bwin to ban Bavarian gamblers,
and criticised the Bavarian state case for not showing
"...a single comprehensible and convincing way that
sportsbetting companies can technically implement the
ban".
It is not at this stage known whether Bavaria intends to
appeal the ruling.
