TEXAS ONLINE GAMBLING FRAUDSTER JAILED FOR A DECADE
4 May 2007
Restitution payments totalling $915 000 ordered
Smooth talking Robert Eon Marshall (58) of Fort Worth
Texas will be a guest of the state correctional system
following his sentence this week to 10 years
imprisonment for an Internet gambling-related scam that
disadvantaged 41 mainly elderly and retired victims.
The con man is also required to pay back $915 000 of his
ill gotten gains from the scam, reports Associated
Press.
At least 41 people - mostly elderly victims using
retirement dollars - lost money to Marshall, who pleaded
guilty to mail fraud in cases that go back to 2003.
Prosecutors revealed that Marshall founded a group of
companies under the title ECM Group, which was
associated with online gambling websites Double Your
Money Casino.com and World Poker Party.com.
Marshall sold investors $10 000 shares in his operation,
which he claimed was an affiliate scheme that received a
percentage of the losses of the gamblers he referred to
the gambling sites. However, federal authorities
involved in the case said that Marshall well knew that
his business model generated less than a thousand
dollars in total for the company.
Despite this, Marshall claimed to potential investors
that in 2003 and 2004 the company was successful, and
this was exacerbated when he mailed false financial
reports to encourage further investment, prosecutors
said.
