NEW YORK APPROVES HORSE RACE BETTING OVER THE
INTERNET
4 May 2007
Working that carve-out.....
The horse racing business enjoys one of the more
controversial and notorious legislative carve-outs in
the USA, and true to its previous announcements it is
now going online following a New York State Racing and
Wagering Board approval of an application from the New
York Racing Association (NYRA) to provide pari-mutuel
wagering via the Internet.
The approval clears the way for NYRA, operator of the
three largest racetracks in New York, to launch an
online wagering platform powered by Sona Mobile
technology (see previous InfoPowa report).
The Internet wagering platform will be the first of its
kind licensed in NY State. Legislation authorising
Internet wagering in NY State went into effect on
January 22, 2007. The New York State Racing and Wagering
Board is the regulatory body responsible for oversight
of this activity. In this regard the Board issued
requirements with respect to reporting, record keeping,
operational and application guidelines for racetracks
and off-track betting (OTB) corporations that intend to
offer wagering using electronic platforms.
Sona Mobile announced a strategic partnership deal with
NYRA earlier this year and has been developing a
web-based wagering platform, which will allow racing
fans to access real-time racetrack information and
securely place wagers on all races.
