CURACAO BANK UNDER PRESSURE
30 March 2007
Corresponding US bank pulls the rug on Internet
gambling transactions
Yet another manifestation of the far-reaching
implications of the US Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act came to notice this week with the news
that Curacao-based Giro Bank, which has hitherto been
prepared to handle online gambling transactions, has
been threatened.
Letter from Giro to its clients advised that its
(unnamed) corresponding US bank had threatened to severe
relationships unless the online gambling aspect of
Giro's business was abandoned.
It is unknown if other banks in the region have been
similarly threatened.
