Two Indian sportsbetting operators arrested
in hotel room raid
Prevention of Crime Branch police in the ancient Indian
city of Ahmedabad, the largest urban centre in the state
of Gujarat, have arrested two men facilitating
sportsbetting over the Internet through unidentified
websites. The arrests followed a tip-off which led the
police to a hotel room, where the two accused men were
taking bets on the India-England T20 match, reports the
Times of India.
According to PCB officials,
Jayesh Ganatra and Dipak Chudasama, both residents of
Jamnagar, used a laptop to operate on the Internet which
was seized, along with six mobile phones and Rs 40 000
in cash.
"The men were taking bets from the city
and state on India-England match in the ongoing T20
world cup," said a police spokesman. "They were using
several betting sites to quote rates. We are yet to get
the exact amount that they took bets on. The amount
recovered from them was also paid by city-based
gamblers."
