NO U.S.- ANTIGUA RESOLUTION IN SIGHT YET (Update)
6 June 2008
Islander's lawyer says resolution unlikely by
deadline
Hopes that the World Trade Organisation dispute between
the United States and Antigua and Barbuda would be
amicably resolved instead of going to arbitration (see
previous InfoPowa reports) were dashed this week when
the islander's legal representative, Mark Mendel opined
that he did not believe a settlement was possible by the
June 6 deadline.
That's not necessarily the end of the matter, as the
Antiguan Finance Minister, Dr. Errol Cort said last week
that if there was a real prospect of success he would be
prepared to agree to an extension of the June 6
deadline. "I am very encouraged that there are at least
[the] components of a possible settlement agreement,"
the minister commented.
Mendel said that he did not believe a settlement by the
deadline was possible, but he hinted that Cort's
preparedness to extend the deadline may be implemented
if the Americans accepted that a compromise makes sense.
