EUROPEAN COMMISSION TO CENSURE PROTECTIONIST EU
STATES
29 June 2007
The next step could be the European Court of
Justice
After months of warnings and wrangling, the governing
European Commission will officially censure France,
Greece and Sweden this week due to moves by those
nations to effectively create a state monopoly in sports
gambling, according to Agence France-Presse.
Greece is set to receive only an initial warning;
however, both France and Sweden will be issued final
warnings, before being taken to the bodies' highest
court - the European Court of Justice.
The European Union's executive arm will give final
warnings to Paris and Stockholm on Wednesday before
taking them to the European Court of Justice, the
sources said.
The Commission also has cases underway against Austria,
Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy and the
Netherlands.
