Rank Interactive turns away online players from
the land downunder
Taking many players by surprise this week was the news
that Australian resident online gamblers are being
turned away by the Blue Square and Grosvenor Casino
online gambling sites in the UK Rank Interactive group.
It has long been common knowledge that Australian
federal law prohibits the offering of online gambling to
Australian residents by Australian based online gambling
sites, but most did not believe that this applied to
companies domiciled elsewhere. Australian based online
casinos such as Lasseters and Centrebet offer their
betting products widely outside Australia.
A Rank Interactive representative confirmed the ban,
revealing that the decision not to allow Australian
players was made a good few years ago, when the group
had land based interests within Australia, and when
Grosvenor Casino was trading under the Hard Rock brand.
"Just to clarify, Blue Square Casino and Grosvenor
Casinos don't allow Australian players," he said.
"The reason why we don't accept players from Australia
is that as part of a large publicly traded company, we
felt that it was too much of a risk to allow players
from Australia; this is also one of the reasons why we
have never accepted players from the USA."
