TAIWANESE SPORTS BETTING ARRESTS CONTINUE (Update)
1 June 2007
Three more arrests reported
The Taiwanese Criminal Investigation Bureau continued
it's raids on sports betting operations with a raid in
Pingtung County that netted three alleged illegal
betting organisers and the confiscation of computer and
telecommunications equipment and gambling records.
The three men arrested were Wang Chao-jen (52) Ko
Lin-lung (28) and Li Chi-lie (47). Preliminary
investigations indicated that the sites, which have been
operating for about six months, accrued NT$50 million to
NT$60 million in illegal revenues, reports the newspaper
China Today.
The accused men operated domestically with the use of
designated agents who were in charge of recruiting new
members on a commission basis.
The CIB estimated that the gambling sites mustered a
total of over 1 000 members, all of whom were referred
to by nicknames or 'handles'. The members were given the
option to bet on U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) games,
and other professional sports associations such as the
National Basketball Association (NBA).
The raid follows other arrests earlier this week when 9
members of a gambling ring were arrested by CIB
operatives in collaboration with Taoyuan County police
in parts of Hsinchuan City and Taipei County.
