Malaysian police keep up the pressure

The Bernama news agency in Malaysia reports that police have contiinued raids on suspected online gambling establishments, arresting 130 people, including eight women, in online gambling raids on 34 Internet cafes in the Kuantan district over the past month.

Kuantan OCPD ACP Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said among those arrested were 34 owners of premises while the rest were clients.

He told reporters that in the operation codenamed “Operasi Dadu”, police also seized 101 personal computers worth RM 400 000.

The suspects, who were in their 20s and 30s, were being investigated under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and could be fined between RM10,000 and RM100,000 if convicted, he added.

Mohd Jasmani said police would step up operations against gambling activities and that this year alone, police in the district had already carried out over 80 raids.

He said police had also sent letters to the Kuantan Municipal Council and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, recommending the withdrawal of licences and denial of electricity supply to the premises concerned as a further punitive as well as preventative measure.
