NORTH CAROLINA: 'ONLINE SWEEPSTAKES' ON HOLD
22 January 2010
Kinston City makes its own move on Internet
gambling
The vexing questions regarding the legality of
'sweepstakes' gambling at North Carolina Internet cafes
has persuaded one city council to place a moratorium on
the games until it has investigated the issue more
thoroughly.
The Kinston City Council imposed the
60 day moratorium this week, resolving to look into
operations like the Neuse Business Center in the city,
an internet cafe that advertises a chance to win cash.
It's a perfectly legal business at the moment, reports
local station WITN, but some see it as legal gambling
and a cover for casino gambling online.
In
December, the state Court of Appeals upheld a ban to
make video poker and slot machines illegal in North
Carolina, but the Internet aspects of the pastime remain
clouded in confusion and controversy.
