UKRAINIAN GAMBLING: LITTLE CHANCE OF REPRIEVE
15 January 2010
Cabinet: Gambling business unlikely to be
licensed
The Ukrainian News reports the ban on gambling imposed
by the Ukrainian government in a controversial move last
year (see previous InfoPowa reports) is unlikely to be
lifted unless there is a change of government.
The government's position on the issue was reinforced
this week by news that the Cabinet of Ministers has - in
resolution 14 of January 6 - excluded gambling from the
list of economic activities that can be licensed in the
country.
The exclusion also embraces the
organisation and maintenance of gambling establishments
from the list of licensed types of economic activity.
However, it appears that existing land gambling
licensees involved in lottery activities are exceptions
to the overall ban.
On May 15, 2009, the
Verkhovna Rada banned gambling on the territory of
settlements within Ukraine following similar draconian
actions by the Russian government.
