BET24 SWITCHES TO GIBRALTAR
30 January 2009
EU access important, says online betting group
Online casino and poker room Bet24.com has announced
that it has become the latest site to obtain a European
Union-friendly licence after being accredited by the
British overseas territory of Gibraltar.
“It’s a really important day for Bet24.com,” said Chris
Dahl, Poker Manager for Bet24.com. “We are one of a
small number of poker operators to have been granted a
European Union licence in Gibraltar. Now all our
products are licensed within the European Union. The
requirements for obtaining a license are very strict so,
of course, we have been looking forward to this day.”
The Scandinavian-focused site revealed that tax has been
a hot issue for some considerable time for Danish,
Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish poker players and was
recently illustrated when Danish professional poker
player Peter Eastgate won the World Series of Poker in
Las Vegas, only to be confronted with a huge tax bill on
his $9.15 million winnings.
Recently, the Dutch taxman had approached Internet
gamblers resident in the country that it had identified,
inviting them to submit tax returns on their winnings.
Dahl said that confidentiality was paramount within the
company, and that more liberal EU tax attitudes
prevailed through the Gibraltar licence.
“Together with our poker supplier, Ongame Network, and
the authorities in Gibraltar, we have found a solution
so we are now officially a licence holder in Gibraltar,”
said Dahl.
“We are very happy because now we can operate under the
same conditions as the [EU state] monopolies, at least
as far as tax is concerned.”
