CORRUPT CHINESE OFFICIAL SENTENCED TO DEATH
16 January 2009
Government official gambled away millions intended
for his countrymen's housing
The death sentence imposed on corrupt Chinese government
official Li Shubiao in 2005 has been confirmed by the
Chenzhou Intermediate People's Court following a retrial
for graft and misappropriation of public funds, reports
the Xinhua news agency this week.
Whilst head of the Administrative Center for Housing
Accumulation Funds of Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, Li
Shubiao embezzled more than 118 million yuan (US$17.26
million) in funds allocated to buy homes for 200 000
city workers between 1999 and 2004.
The court heard that Li used the embezzled funds to
gamble in Macau and other places or spend extravagantly.
About 77.475 million yuan was outstanding when Li's case
was first investigated in January 2004.
In the first trial, Li, now 45, was convicted on three
counts: graft, misappropriation of public funds and
gambling.
In August 2005, the court sentenced Li to death,
stripped him of his political rights and seized all his
personal property.
No date was announced for the execution, which requires
Supreme Court approval.
