WHAT HAPPENED TO CASINO RED'S LAND OPERATION?
6 February 2009
Online division still operating, with no news of
the shutdown
Casino Red, a land extension of the online gambling
casino bearing the same brand, closed abruptly in
December last year, only months after a GBP 5 million
renovation project on the premises, a former cinema in
the town of Huddersfield, UK turning it into an elegant
and licensed land casino (see previous InfoPowa reports)
The closure was prefaced by a suspension in trading
notified to the local football team, which enjoyed a
shirt sponsorship from the company.
Some weeks on, the circumstances surrounding the
closure, and the compensation for almost a hundred
employees remains unclear, although local media have
suggested that a shortage of investor funds is behind
the shutdown.
Strangely, the online version of the brand, which offers
mobile, poker, sports and casino action, appears to be
fully operational...and carries no mention of the land
failure.
The last news on the site relates to the installation of
a large projection screen in November 2008 - very close
to the shutdown date.
Formed in 2006, Casino Red's online operation is
licensed in Gibraltar. The original plans for the land
version, in Northumberland Street in the town centre,
involved the extensive redevelopment of one of
Huddersfield’s most treasured buildings. It included
ground floor casino facilities, the Scarlet Restaurant
on the original mezzanine circle at first floor level
and the Ruby Lounge bar above.
