CYPRIOT POLICE ARREST ONLINE GAMBLING ISRAELIS
11 December 2009
Allegations of operating an illegal sports
betting website, supplying pirated cable
Israel News reports that police in Larnaca, Cyprus have
detained five Israeli citizens on suspicion of operating
an illegal sports betting website, and supplying pirated
cable television. The five suspects have denied all
charges.
The five suspects were resident in an
apartment in the nearby town of Oroklini when police
visited the premises with a search warrant, uncovering
eight satellite dishes which were illegally connected,
according to the police report.
Police Sergeant
Lefki Salomandros told local media that during the
search further evidence was uncovered, which was
presented to a court Friday and led to the remand in
custody of the Israelis. The Israeli Foreign Ministry
had been made aware of the detentions.
"The
moment the suspects realised that the police were on to
them, they tried to hide evidence," said Sergeant
Salomandros. "They cut the pirate connections."
No further details were available when InfoPowa went to
press.
