British online and live tournament poker pro James
Akenhead is $500 000 richer after winning the Full Tilt
Poker Million VIII this week.
Organised by
Matchroom Sports the televised invitational event
featured 72 poker aces from around the globe vying for
the half-million dollar first prize in a shootout-style
competition, with the final table taking place in London
Friday.
Akenhead's considerable experience in
final tabling at both the World Series of Poker (WSOP)
and World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Main Events
earlier this year stood the Brit pro in good stead,
enabling him to defeat the top six survivors to take
home the money. He faced players of the calibre of Luke
Schwartz, Taylor Caby, Juha Helppi, Dag Martin Mikkelsen,
and two online qualifiers from Full Tilt, Peter Vasiliou
and Craig Wakeham.
When Mikkelsen was eliminated
by Helppi in third place the heads up was set between
Helppi, who had the chip lead, and Akenhead, but the
latter managed to wrest control of the match after a
relatively few number of hands, and emerge as the winner
after a total of 4 hours of final table play.
