Growing numbers of poker rooms are now offering million dollar guaranteed tournament prize pools


PokerRoom's monthly "The Grand" online poker tournament will this month present a guaranteed $1 million prize pool, positioning the event alongside those of other major companies competing in the Internet poker sector.

The Grand started life with a then top-end prize pool of $100 000, but has escalated this significantly in line with competing products. The tournament is a three-day event held on the last weekend of each month, deploying a qualifying heat system that allows the player to choose which day best suits him or her.

To buy-in direct, players need $1 000+$40 direct buy-in, but there are cheaper, if more competitive ways to get into the big game, principally through a range of qualifiers with entry fees as low as $1+10 cents for multi-table tournament qualifiers or $5+50 cents sit-and-gos.

PokerRoom is investing heavily in tournament action this month, with an additional $100 000 freeroll that will give the winner a useful $26 500 sponsorship deal plus a trip to London in October for a European Poker Tour.
