Aussie pro takes New Zealand Poker Championship title and $100 000

Christchurch Casino in New Zealand was the setting this week for the final table in the New Zealand Poker Championship, which turned out to be a hard-fought contest with some fine poker skills on display.

An Australian and a New Zealander confronted each other in the final heads up when Kiwi househusband Richard Grace and his Australian opponent poker pro Eric Assadourian finished off the game.

Assadourian ran out the winner after a tough contest, and returned to the land of Oz with the $100 000 main prize, the trophy and a sponsored seat in the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event.

"I used all my experience to win the tournament," Assadourian said in a press release after his win, "but I was made to really work for it. When I made it to the final table, I only had one thing on my mind and that was to win the tournament. People kept folding around me and I was able to build up a decent amount of chips."

Wellington, New Zealand resident Grace picked up $60 000 for his second placing.

Christchurch Casino Poker Operations Manager Mick Ryan said the event was a brilliant climax to a week of scintillating poker. "There were people trying to knock each other out right from the start, it was great to see a Kiwi there at the end, but Eric 'The Voice' Assadourian has shown throughout the tournament he is a very shrewd player and knows when to take a risk," he said.
