WORD FROM THE MEISTER

ABSOLUTE POKER - DON'T LIE TO US

Because you will get caught out. As you probably know by now, Absolute poker's website was hacked into and someone was able to access a super user account which enabled him the privilege of "seeing" everyone else's hands. This player had participated in a tournament where obviously he had won. The losing players - and a number of others who were concerned with this - had analyzed the tournament play and alerted Absolute Poker a little over a month ago.

Absolute Poker's initial response was luke warm. It seemed as though they had no idea how serious an issue this was.

For over a month, the message boards were alive with numerous threads detailing the cheating episode. These players are not stupid. For some reason many poker rooms and casinos take it for granted that a large number of their player base are sheep lining up for the fleecing. This episode proves them wrong (if they had thought this). We have doctors, lawyers, accountants, college professors, retired CPAs and law enforcement officials, scientists and artists; these are your players.

Anyway, to make a long story short - Absolute Poker was busted out by everyone to include the Wizard of odds Michael Shackelford, MSNBC, New York Times, ABC News and a number of other main stream media reports.

Absolute Poker responded by opening themselves up to an investigation by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission (this is where they are licensed) which employed Gaming Associates to do an audit of their activity.

Well that's fine and dandy - actually that was great news since they finally admitted that there was something wrong.

But just yesterday, ABsolute Poker came out with this statement:

Upon learning of the incident, AP immediately contacted Gaming Associates, an independent worldwide expert in audits, interactive gaming tests and information security, to undertake an internal investigation. Immediately thereafter, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission (KGC), AP's governing licensing authority, opened its own inquiry into the scheme. These investigations are active and on-going. AP is cooperating fully with the KGC investigation."...
Upon learning of the incident? What incident are they referring to? Clearly it is not the incident of being notified by alarmed players and myself in mid-September. They stated the following on 19 September:
"There are no "superuser" accounts that enable players to see other players' hole cards.

Despite our confidence in the security of our systems, we researched hands involving accounts that were mentioned in the online forum posts over the weekend and did not find any incidence of cheating by the accounts in question. Results mentioned in the forums were over a small sample of hands, and we have researched these hands as well as numerous other hands involving these players and have found that the pattern of play of the players did not lend credibility to the claim that the players knew the cards of other players at the table.
It was only about a month later when Michael Shackelford published his report here and this was picked up by the mainstream press.

That's the incident we're talkin' about. To state publicly that the "Gaming Associates" were notified as soon as they learned of the incident is a load of hooey.

We depend on poker rooms and casinos to be fully honest with us; we deserve no less. To try and placate everyone with damage control PR statements don't cut it. And believe me, there is a massive amount of damage control going on. There are rumors flying around about who might have done what to this and that. These are red herrings. And if you don't know what a red herring is, look it up here. All these gossipy sidenotes are diverting our attention from the real incident: Players were cheated. For how long? Who knows. Can we trust this poker room ever again? That is for you to decide.

Absolute Poker has years of experience in this business and they should know what to expect from players and how to treat them.

And now for the humor......
'The Obedient Wife'

There was a man who had worked all his life, had saved all of his money, and was a real miser when it came to his money.

Just before he died, he said to his wife...'When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take my money to the afterlife with me.'

And so he got his wife to promise him, with all of her heart, that when he died, she would put all of the money into the casket with him.

Well, he died He was stretched out in the casket, his wi fe was sitting there - dressed in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, and just! before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said,

'Wait just a moment!'She had a small metal box with her; she came over with the box and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down and they rolled it away. So her friend said,

'Girl, I know you were not foolish enough to put all that money in there with your husband.'

The loyal wife replied, 'Listen, I'm ! a Christian; I cannot go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money into the casket with him.'

You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket with him!?!?!?'

'I sure did,' said the wife. 'I got it all together, put it into my account, and wrote him a check.... If he can cash it, then he can spend it.'

DAMAGE CONTROL UNDERWAY AT ONLINE POKER ROOM?

Absolute Poker pays players, floats theories

With a comprehensive official statement still awaited on its crisis of trust (see previous InfoPowa reports) the staff at Absolute Poker has gone from denial to admission and a furious blizzard of theories on its position, floated on gambling information portals.

As the week ended Absolute Poker players involved in the controversial cheating tournament that started the scandal were reportedly approached by the online poker room and given $500. The portal 4Flush revealed that this was apparently offered as compensation for their private information being revealed in the comprehensive .xls file sent to a player by a "lazy" Absolute Poker staffer, which contains much of the proof of cheating.

That was followed by a series of apparently 'unofficial' disclosures by Absolute Poker spokesmen to portals such as 911 which seemed to float a variety of operational scenarios. Included in the allegations was the astonishing statement that "hacking" by employees at Costa Rican based gambling sites is a not uncommon practice!

"Hacking is an all too common practice among skilled tech employees of Costa Rican online gambling establishments and rarely is it done to be malicious. This employee wanted to prove to us he could do this (see the hole cards)," a Senior Manager of Absolute Poker 'conveyed' to Gambling911.com.

There were also strong denials that Scott Tom, who was tracked by players investigating the debacle, was involved.

"Scott Tom is one of the original founders. He has played on the site but is no longer legally involved," a spokesperson for Absolute Poker told Gambling911.com. "He was also never a CEO of Absolute as some have reported."

The familiar if tenuous argument that a gambling operator makes too much money to be involved in cheating was also flown, a 'representative' of the firm allegedly claiming: "Absolute Poker takes in so much money, why would any of the owners risk damaging such a successful business by cheating?"

And the point was made that Absolute Poker was not having a "run on the bank" as a result of this crisis - on the contrary it is "...business as usual and payouts are not being delayed in the least."

Over at eGaming Today the webmaster posted the following:

"Okay, I just got off the phone with someone who spoke to Russ Hamilton, former owner of UP [Ultimate Poker] .

"Two people will be implicated here, you can probably guess who. One is going to be removed from online poker forever and one is going be removed for a fair amount of time.

"I was asked not to post specifics and that AP's statement is going to be detailed and is going to be released Sunday morning.

"UPDATE: Absolute Scapegoat? Absolute Poker claims rogue programmer framed owner/executive."

With so many tempting tasters, and rumours rife the real, official and final position from Absolute Poker is eagerly anticipated by players and industry media alike.
