The Virtual online casino group shoots itself in the foot again
When it comes to reputation, few online casino groups are regarded by the player community in as bad a light as the RTG-powered and Costa Rican based Virtual group. Despite constant player complaints and reports of questionable behaviour, this group continues to apparently flourish, suggesting that many players do not research before handing their cash over.
This week the group reached an all-time low and was at the centre of criticism from outraged players across the planet. The cause? An ill-advised and totally insensitive attempt to launch a promotion based on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the USA, where thousands of innocent victims died.
"Danny Virtual" used an email to draw attention to the international tragedy with some emotive wording before inviting recipients to take advantage of his cynical "911% Twin Towering Total Bonus."
Stunned players and industry observers were universal in condemning the attempt to exploit a human tragedy that is still a source of deep sadness and outrage, and a Dutch player probably summed it up in saying:
"This day is the day of mourning to remember the victims and their families. I think this casino is crossing the red line because it is not a day for enjoying games. It is the day to remember those who were gone and praying for them. God bless the victims."
RealTime Gaming CEO Mike McMain, contacted on the issue said he would "look into it," but Danny Virtual himself was unrepentant, claiming that this was his company's way of 'reminding' people about the tragedy.
He wrote: "Every year, amongst other important subjects dear to my heart, I bring attention to 911" and "911 is dear to my heart and this is the only way I can shed light on it." His rationalisation for an incredibly offensive promotion only added fuel to the fire as criticism continued.
One poster suggested that the Virtual action qualified as "Most tasteless promo of 2007," which probably sums up this ill-advised blunder to perfection.
