Dear Reader,

If you were wondering what happened to yesterday's newsletter, well it was a holiday, and I don't work holidays.

So I spent most of the day with my wife, kids, and friends. We let the kids ride some ponies at a nearby stable, and later took a walk around the local castle. Actually, it's an old fortress that unlike many of the German fortresses around here, was never conquered and occupied by the Swedes during the 30 Year's War (early 17th Century). Legend has it that the Swedes had laid siege on this fortress, trying to starve the poor Germans out, and it just about worked. After several weeks, the Germans had nothing left in their food lockers. They only had one little rabbit to share amongst themselves. But before they ate the poor little guy, they had an idea. They let the little bunny loose on the castle wall where it hip-hoppity hopped along the top of the wall in full view of the Swedes (who were camped out down below). Well, when the Swedes saw this, they were startled. They thought, "these Germans must have so much food left, they're letting their bunnies run wild." So the Swedes packed their bags and went back to Sweden to start Boss Media. The Germans rejoiced and made the bunny into the town mascot. They were saved by a hare.

Historically yours,

Bryan

WORD FROM THE MEISTER
The GPWA
Last week I made an announcement in my newsletter that I was longer a member of the Gambling Portal Webmasters' Association. I made some pointed comments that were taking with extreme offense by a number of members of this organization. This was very unfortunate, but I expected this.

But what I didn't expect was the insulting behaviour that some members of this organization displayed. I was bemused by some of the comments, but surprised at the venom that was involved. Apparently, when I said "if the shoe fits, wear it" it was taken to heart by a number of these individuals. Stooping to name calling is simply childish. I have never called a single one of these webmasters an offensive name either in public nor in private. How these people vented was a real low point in my opinion. But to bring this to closure, I just want to take a few moments to clear up some misconceptions and misunderstandings.

My leaving the GPWA wasn't cloaked in some dubious intentions or via a case of ruffled feathers. It was specifically because there are two conflicting philosophies: mine and their's (as I stated in last week's newsletter and webcast).

As for my participation with the GPWA, I agree I took the backseat in many of the discussions since most affiliate issues don't pertain to me. Popping in now and then to give whatever advice I thought I could give. I wasn't posting in the GPWA's forum on a daily basis like the "regulars", but I was there. I had my cloaking device turned on, since I don't like people knowing when I am lurking about (this is a profile option in these phpbb boards). If the webmaster would have correctly checked her stats, she would have seen that I was logged in nearly on a daily basis.

As for participation, many affiliate managers and casino operators that I have been involved with have asked me occasionally what my thoughts were about the GPWA. I have been very open with them and stated that the GPWA was a really good and powerful organization that should be taken seriously. But that was in the past. If anyone approaches me now with these question, I won't be able to make these glowing comments about them anymore.

Unfortunately what these people (the offended ones at the GPWA) don't get, is that there is more to an organization than a message board.

Supporters of the GPWA, sorry for what you feel was a unprofessional move by me, but I have been frustrated with this "affiliate greed" for some time now. I've written about this before, but didn't make any reference to the GPWA. What I published was for my audience, my readers and listeners. I didn't prance through cyberland spamming the forums with my message. That would have been self-indulgent and self-serving.

And yes, I was very apprehensive in making this statement since I really like a lot of the webmasters in the GPWA. We just have different beliefs. And don't forget that I feel that there are many good webmasters out there that belong to the GPWA, a point that I stressed in my article.

Some of you who were the most upset should take the time to reread what I wrote. But now it's water under the bridge. I think we are on two different wavelengths that don't really jive.

One last thing: why didn't I just quit and keep my mouth shut? Because I feel that there is a great deal of responsibility involved when one chooses to promote online casinos. And any association that organizes these people (webmasters) should keep that close to heart. You're not selling encyclopaedias now are you?

Vortran and I decided yesterday that we will no longer participate in any more organizations. We will just do it alone. And to all who have shown their support, thanks! At least I know who my friends are!
RTG FREE ZONE
As of this week, I don't advertise RTG casinos; I don't help them solve their problems.

It was a tough decision. I feel bad for the good operators, since there are a number of other portals who will be following suit (if they haven't done so already).

    3. This week's humor
A woman and her lover are in bed together when suddenly, her husband comes home. The woman jumps up, shoves the guy in a corner of the bedroom, rubs him down in baby oil and covers him in talcum powder. "Don't move! You're a statue!" she says. The husband comes up to the bedroom and inquires about the new decoration. The wife explains that the Smith family next door acquired a statue for their bedroom recently, and if they could get one, so could she.

The married couple go to bed, but at midnight the husband goes downstairs, gets a glass of milk and some cookies and comes back upstairs. He hands the snack to the 'statue' and says, "Here. I stood around for 3 days at the Smiths', and they never fed me a thing!"

    UK GAMBLING LEGISLATION LATEST

Online casinos will be recognized as legitimate

New Media Zero reported this week that the British government will this autumn give a major boost to the online gaming industry by finally giving the green light to firms wanting to run online casinos in the UK. The government is expected to push through new laws on 'remote gambling' and create a regulatory structure aimed at establishing the UK as a gambling and gaming hub, after plans were first put forward by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell in March last year. The DCMS is to publish a Position Paper 'The Future Regulation of Remote Gambling' next week dealing with the details of the regulation. The term 'remote' was used to take in technologies outside the Internet, such as WAP.

Companies that apply for UK licences to launch online casinos will have to meet strict requirements, such as proving the system is technically reliable and has secure pay methods and safeguards to prevent money laundering or access by minors.

The changes are expected to open up the market to a number of major household brands that are keen to launch online casinos based around their properties.

Several North American gaming giants - which until now have based operations on the Isle of Man or which have stayed away from the European market completely - are also expected to try and capitalise on the deregulation.
