1 August 2002 Issue #120 weekly Dear readers, Ahh, the dog days of August are here. This is when the heat lingers and sometimes we have to deal with the muggiest, hottest days of the summer. But what does this have to do with dogs? Well I'll tell ya. It has to do with the "dog star" Sirius. Sirius is the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. It belongs to the constellation Canus Major (the Big Dog, it's his nose), and he is one of Orion's hunting dogs which appears overhead in the winter nighttime skies. About a thousand years ago, it rose about an hour before the sun at the beginning of August. People believed the combined light of Sirius and the sun caused hot weather. Today, one would have to wait until late August or early September for the Sun and Sirius to line up like that. Oops, it's the professor in me trying to teach you something. Anyway, I hope that with each one of these newsletters, you'll become an increasingly knowledgable individual to better our life on this planet. Read on... Knowingly yours, Bryan In this issue: 1. 2. And now for the humor... From the archives: Everybody on Earth dies and goes to heaven. God comes and says, "I want the men to make two lines. One line for the men who dominated their women on earth and the other line for the men who were dominated by their women. Also, I want all the women to go with St. Peter." Said and done. The next time God looked, the women were gone and there were two lines. The line of the men that were dominated by their women was 100 miles long, and in the line of men that dominated their women, there was only one man. God got mad and said, "You men should be ashamed of yourselves. I created you in my image and you were all whipped by your spouses. Look at the only one of my sons that stood up and made me proud. Learn from him! Tell them my son, how did you manage to be the only one in this line?" The man replied, "I don't know, my wife told me to stand here" Ha ha ha. And today's quote (for the ladies) "Behind every successful man stands an astonished woman." Return to Top | |||||||||

MONTE CARLO AND MAJOR MILLIONS My Escapades on the French Riviera, Part II For those of you who are in the dark, let me begin: a player at Captain Cooks Casino won $1.6 million dollars at the progressive "Major Millions" a couple of months ago, and he was invited to Monte Carlo to celebrate his winnings with the folks at Captain Cooks, Microgaming, Jackpot Madness, and a few select individuals in the cyber world of online casinos. Oh a lucky few we were. The first full day was a full one. My wife and I woke up at a comfortably early hour. No kids, yahoo! We were to "dine" for breakfast downstairs in the hotel's restaurant at 9. Before I got dressed, I checked the hotel's handbook looking for any indication of a dress code. Sure enough, there it was; slacks required, no shorts, no problem; I had a couple pair of pants packed away. But what they meant to indicate was that this didn't pertain to breakfast. Most everyone dining on the terrace wore shorts, and there was a young couple in the corner wearing their hotel supplied bathrobes and slippers, (they were hanging behind the door in the bathroom). Tony (the "Major Millions" winner) told me that before he left home, he was watching the Discovery Channel and coincidently the program "Lives of the Rich and Famous" had a segment on the hotels of Monte Carlo. He watched the entire segment, but they never mentioned the hotel we were staying at until at the commercial break they ran the teaser "stay tuned, and we'll be right back with the most exclusive hotel in Monte Carlo, the Hermitage". He explained how the following segment covered the hotel as having the friendliest staff and that you can have breakfast clad in bathrobes and slippers. How true it was. The breakfast covered everything for anybody. Made to order omelettes for the egg eaters, fresh fruit and breads for the Europeans, cereal and yoghurts for the kids at heart. There was nothing left to be desired. Greyling and Tamar, the trip coordinators, surprised everyone with a gift: digital cameras to use on the trip. Greyling, by the way, is a very charming, intelligent, handsome bloke who is available for an attractive wealthy young woman. Really he is, and he didn't ask me to say this, I am writing it on my own accord. Tamar was the major point of contact for all of our activities which proceeded flawlessly. After breakfast, we did the bus tour. Riding along the winding roads of the French Riviera, we traveled to Nice. Our tour guide pointed out (in English!) selective points of interest as we drove by. Most of us were fumbling with our new cameras, half listening to the guide as we attempted to read the instructions and glance up at the fleeting sights. I just said the heck with it and used my old camera. Nice was nice, ha ha. But the highlight of the morning was the tour of a winery located up in the hills. We arrived and it was reminiscent of Crete or Southern California; dry arid hills teeming with old twisted olive trees. Made me feel a little homesick (for California). The young winestress gave us a tour of the wine cellar, which was cool, damp, and smelled good, and afterward a taste of a rose, a red, and a white wine. The white wine and rose tasted a bit sour, and the red tasted rather woody. I don't think they were quite done yet. Lunch was served at the "Chez Simon" which was located in the hills overlooking Nice. We grouped ourselves around one long table and commenced drinking more wine and partaking in the cuisine and getting to know each other a bit better. It was here that I posed the question I was dying to ask Tony, "What exactly happened on the screen when you won the jackpot? Were there extra bells and whistles? Did the Major do a backflip? What did you do? What happened?" I was really curious. He looked at me and smiled "Y'know it was the wildest thing..." and he went on to describe how he made a small deposit and was playing the progressives. He played "Major Millions" for a little bit then switched to "Lotsa Loot". He was getting ready to call it a night when he went back to "Major Millions", then wham. A grey screen dropped down and it said "Congratulations! You have just won the progressive jackpot!" That was it. "Oh my God," he said, staring at it in total disbelief. He stared at it a little bit longer before it began to sink in. "Oh my God!" he yelled as he ran upstairs to drag his wife out of the shower. They both scrambled down and entered the room standing a safe distance away from the computer, afraid to get too close, perhaps touching something that would cause the image to vanish. (This conjured up thoughts of the film 2001, when the primitive hominids were approaching the black obelisk; only the brave ones had the nerve to get close enough to touch it, and when they did, they went nuts.) Next week: the casinos of Monte Carlo - real men don't play video poker - we reluctantly go home EUROPEANS, GAMBLING, AND INTERCASINO European Gambler Strikes it Rich using the Internet Got2bet is no longer the USA-only craze that some American politicians would have you believe. Growth rates for Internet gambling outside the United States is on the rise and non-US e-gambling will surpass US e-gambling before 2004. Highly regulated European legislative jurisdictions are giving net gambling the green flag, and it should come as no surprise that European gamblers are now beginning to win their fair share of the online mega-jackpots. The European players are rolling in the cash in numbers that will turn red, white and blue gamblers to envious shades of green. The proof is in the pudding, as the latest online champion "Jeffrey" won $124,953.75 at InterCasino (www.intercasino.com InterCasino is one of the few sites that has been able to successfully offer both a North American and a European online casino. Part of that success is owed to the painstaking detail the company applied to its Spanish and German sites. The language is not just translated, it's localized. It is details like this that fuel European online gaming. Online casino regulation in Europe is approached from a different angle than in the US. The UK in particular is embracing online gaming from all angles and expects to have licensed online gaming operators taking bets from England by 2005. A recent report released by England's MPS on the House of Commons Culture Committee found that the liberalization of betting laws "will not result in a flood of new players getting hooked on gambling." as is the concern in the US and went on to report "...that the Government will create opportunities, particularly for casinos, to modernize existing gambling products to bring the UK industry in line with other jurisdictions." With Europe looking at the Got2bet market as an extension of the terrestrial gaming business, there is no doubt that the future of European gambling is set to go interactive. The highest online gaming usage in Europe is currently from the UK, Norway and Germany. But as InterCasino player Jeffery will tell you, Holland has its share of players too.
