Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil - Here we go!

As a Liverpool fan i am gutted and disgusted by Suarez :( im afraid he will be banned from all football, not just international football for at least 1 year perhaps 2
and rightly so, to bad that a brilliant footballer as he is got such a twisted mind.

Indeed it is a shame. And I say that as a Man Utd supporter. I genuinely thought he had wised up and turned a corner, especially when he won the PFA Players' Player of the Year award. And then he goes and does this. What puzzles me is that at the time he bit Chiellini, the Uruguayans were still very much in the tournament, there was still a good 10-15 minutes left and they had a 1 man advantage. Everything is in Uruguay's favour, except the scoreline. And that can be fixed.

If he had got caught there and then and got sent off and the match peters out to a 0-0 draw, his tournament is over. And he gets cast as the villain.

If he gets caught later (and he MUST know that he would have, given all the TV cameras around the stadium), he likely gets a ban and his tournament is over, even if they get to the final. And any thoughts he had of winning the Golden Boot are over with it.

Senseless act of stupidity.

Saw screenie that some nordic guy won 1k$ or something like this with low bet that Suarez will do something like this. Multiplier was x 172 for bet. So probably he somehow make same bet :D And after chances to go to 1/8 was low, just earn himself some cash :D Just a theory...

Suarez. What can I say? You have a long ban coming and you deserve it. Silly, silly man.

Apart from that though and a couple of dodgy referee decisions I think this has been one of the best world cups ever! So much better than South Africa!

Agreed. Though I am concerned that the less than stellar officiating could end up overshadowing the entertaining football.

So did anyone one of you bet on Suarez biting? Betsson had a option on it, pretty good odds. Been some reports on some winners here in Norway. lol

I've really been shocked by the level of indiscipline and general rough play in this world cup.
I think soccer players need psychologists to train them on how to handle high pressure situations.
They just fly off the handle and do things that have really dire consequences.
The Cameroonians even almost started having a bust up among themselves.
Crazy.

Indeed. Unfortunately, FIFA lost their bottle when it came to clamping down on indiscipline less than 45 minutes into the tournament, when the referee did not send off Neymar. If a Croatian player had done that, he was off. I am in no doubt that FIFA pretty much said to that referee "Ensure a Brazilian victory". The non-sending off (when Brazil were already 1-0 down), followed by one of the softest penalty awards I've ever seen in my life made that referee look like he was the biggest influence on the result, not the players.

Combine those incidents with the two perfectly good goals that Mexico scored only to have them disallowed and there you have it....the difference between Brazil winning the group and coming second and having to face the Dutch in the second round.

Chile are going to have a tough time trying to win their last 16 tie. If the Brazilians look like they can't beat them, the officials may step in to give them a helping hand....again.

There have been plenty of World Cup scandals over the years. I'm expecting something very dodgy to happen during the knockout stages.

USA & Germany play today. I guess if USA makes it to the next round I might have to learn some rules and watch a match.
I found it amusing watching the news last night. They were talking to young school kids playing soccer & all excited about the game today. One kid says he thinks that Soccer will be big in the US in the next 10 years. I remember hearing the same thing when I was a kid too. Never happened.

If USA is out, I will hope for the underdog Costa Rica or Nigeria.

You should watch today's game. Klinsmann was the former Germany manager (in 2006 when Germany hosted it and got to the semi finals). Then there was the viewing figures in the States for the USA-Portugal the other day. Biggest ever US TV audience for a...ahem...."soccer" game.

I expect the USA to get through, even if they lose tonight. There is some unrest in the Ghana camp. They have suspended two of their players for the remainder of the tournament.

Oh and now the weather.....it's pissing down like there is a sequel to Noak's Ark. Apparently some US fans have abandoned their vehicles some 17 miles from the stadium....and WALKING to the stadium. Hardcore support.

In fact, it's pissing down that much, Klinsmann might be thinking of dropping Clint Dempsey and replacing him with Michael Phelps.

The only thing you said that i understood in that entire statement was Michael Phelps :) Just teasing of course. The game is at noon and I'm at work....ah..working...ah...yeah...working.

USA should go through. Unlucky to draw with Portugal the other night, conceding a last-minute equalizer.
If they draw with Germany, both of them go through. If Germany beat the USA by 1 goal, and Ghana beat Portugal 2-1/3-2/4-3 etc. Ghana go through, but not if they win 1-0 against Portugal because of the USA's better goals-scored. If USA lose to Germany by more than 1 goal and Ghana win by ANY score, Ghana go through. Portugal will need to beat Ghana and Germany beat USA (or USA to beat Germany) by a combined total of 5 goals in order for Portugal to go through with either USA or Germany. If Portugal and Ghana draw, the USA-Germany game is irrelevant as both go through anyway and Portugal and Ghana are out. Got that?? :D

Well - 2 FANTASTIC matches today (Sunday) :notworthy
As England went out with a whimper, I am now supporting the countries closest to where I live (i.e. France, Holland, Belgium & Germany).

What a bloody brilliant performance by Holland/The Netherlands/ whatever you want to call them!
I can't think of a country full of nicer people - and the way their team performed in a ridiculous temperature of 39C was INCREDIBLE.

And Costa Rica... WOW! Played with 10 men for nearly an hour (more like 7-8 for most of that as a few were obviously knackered) - defended amazingly and went on to score 5 penalties out of 5 :notworthy
Totally deserve their place in the last 8.

This has to be one of the best World Cups EVER!

If I had to give them a mark out of 10 for sheer gutsiness....I'd give them a 12.

The England team could learn a thing or two about guts and determination from the Costa Ricans. Real, true grit they showed and fully deserve their place in the quarter finals. They deserve huge respect.

Well, my tips for Holland and Belgium are still going strong......
Holland should beat Costa Rica in the QF to be honest, and set up a semi-final against Brazil or Columbia.
I felt gutted for Chile who harassed and out-battled Brazil, hitting the crossbar at the death of extra time before losing on penalties. I'd expect France to beat Nigeria tonight and Germany to beat Algeria, who will be out to avenge the great fix of Spain 1982 where Germany and neighbours Austria played out a 1-0 Germany win to ensure they both went through at Algeria's expense. There could be a problem IF Nigeria beat France and then proceed to play Germany in the QF.
As the Brazilian TV puts scores on the outside and the first 3 letters of the nation on the inside like this 1 ENG URU 2 it would need amending for the Nigeria-Germany match.

LOL...well spotted.

And I do feel bad for Chile and Mexico. They deserved so much better. Ochoa has been one of the stars of the tournament.

Indeed - I've noticed this afternoon that Brazilian TV seems to have addressed this possibly unfortunate issue - unlike other countries, they have not used the first 3 letters for Nigeria, and have amended them to 'NGA' so will avoid this error. It's academic now as they were knocked out by France anyway.

Semifinal 1:
Brazil - Germany

Semifinal 2:
The Netherlands - Argentina

Wow

Go Germany Go !!!
I've got nothing against South American countries, but I would really love to see Germany & Holland make it through to the final!
