Have you been able to get listed in DMOZ?

Seriously Folks - what do you think it takes to get listed?

What have your experiences with it been?

Have they even replied to you? Any Acknowledgement?

Nope, you will have to find someone on the inside there in order to get listed IMO.

Actually I had a long discussion with one of their Editors - and well... I learned a LOT about DMOZ.

DMOZ is more like a Library than a Yellow Pages.

The General Webmaster Public believes that being listed in DMOZ will up your ranking in GOOGLE - etc.

    Which is not true.

THeir editors only need to put in or CHANGE one entry every 4 months.

They are under strict guidelines - and they certainly do not care what the public thinks of them - as they are NOT there for the public - but as an over all directory that ONLY includes what their editors think it should include.

Very informative discussion - and I learned that my preconceived notion of DMOZ was completely wrong.

I truly won't bother to SUGGEST a site to them ever again.

If my site gets listed - it will be a complete miracle - but that DMOZ has nothing to do with GOOGLE or other Search Engine Placement totally blew my mind --- they advised that it was a RUMOR.

    An unfounded one.

It was interesting - but totally dropped my opinion of what DMOZ is.

    DMOZ = joke

Either the people running DMOZ are blinded by their own arrogance, or they are too self-serving to give a damn.

They won't list Casinomeister because "they" think it's too commercialized and that there is no viable information here. The truth of the matter is that I suspect that one of their editors had a bad experience with me a few years ago.

No viable information here - what a laugh.

None of this can be found at DMOZ.

And then there is the forum...
..it was listed there a couple of years ago, but it has been removed for no apparent reason.

These guys won't answer emails when I have questioned their reviewing policies. They have done an extreme disservice to the player community by putting their needs in front of the players'.

In my opinion, DMOZ holds no weight whatsoever when it comes to providing viable content sites. They are a legend in their own minds.

    I vote on both accounts

Although I've had two gambling sites listed & a couple of forums, most of the editors that I've dealt with on the old Dmoz forum were arrogant prats on power trips.

The original concept behind Dmoz was good in its day. However the net has changed and Dmoz hasn't...

Pre 2004 - 2005 it did help in getting you SE credence, now it doesn't. When webmasters actually realise this fact, Dmoz will be another dinosaur of the net.

That's about all I've got to say on that topic!

Exactly Trezz - that whole conversation - was basically me realizing that dmoz is NOT what I or others think it is.

    Very very strange....

But feel free to read it. It is highly amusing.

Sorry WW I've just no read your/their Dmoz thread posts.

Nice thread though...I bet that pissed a few editors...

    lol@hutcheson...same clown just older...

When Dmoz was started it was a human edited Directory (not a reference site as the clowns would suggest).

dmoz.org states "help build the largest human-edited directory of the web".

    Code:
    <title>ODP - Open Directory Project</title>
    <meta name="description" content="Help build the most comprehensive human-reviewed directory of the web">
<meta name="keywords" content="search, directory, community, web directory, web search, search engine">
Unfortunately the editors got too much power and it went to their heads. EG - hutcheson (he thinks he owns Dmoz) is a good example of this.

In so far as affiliate links and advertising...

I'm sure I read somewhere on Dmoz that no greater the 50% of any submitted site could contain advertising - aff or otherwise.

The problem with these power trippers they started to make up their own rules.

Rumours began that the editors where bias about adding site and some where busted taking bribes...Again they were rumours.

Anyway...The fact is that Dmoz is not a reference site, it's a Directory (human edited)...

But thanks to people like hutcheson they've all but stuffed it! Instead of actually editing anything...(doing their job)...he and his band of losers sit on the ODP forum and take cheap shots at people asking about their submissions.

Edit: As far as I'm aware Google did use Dmoz for its secondary listings. But I think they've since dropped them (2006?).

Other SE still use Dmoz for secondary links but it's fast dwindling list.

    Cheers

As you know I was the editor for the casino forum section until about a year ago. My resignation was because of the fact that an editall once again removed casinomeister from my directory. It was the second time it was removed and it took me weeks to fix it the previous time. This time I had to deal with a "experienced" editall that won some awards for her editing in DMOZ.

To be very honest in the casino section editors have very little say. Casinomeister is red flagged as a spam site and there is no way any editor can list it any more unless a editall gives permission. The chances that it will happen is very slim as the editalls are very poorly experienced in terms of the internet and especially the online casino sections.

In general DMOZ are important for any startup website especially if you consider the way Google uses their TrustRank patent. Human edited directories plays a very important role. Fortunately it is one of many algo's in the Google arsenal so it can be overcome by proper link building from trusted and authority web pages and the implementation of other SEO techniques.

Personally I do not even care about DMOZ and my respect for the DMOZ editalls are non-existent. They have several problems and issues that will always prevent the DMOZ concept from working. The primary problem comes in with the appointment of editalls and editors. If a person applies to be a editor as an authority figure in a specific part of the directory, they are not rated as such due to inexperienced editalls approving their appointments nor can they be trusted as being unbiased due to the fact that they are directly involved in the section they apply to edit. This causes a double edged sword issue. Lets be honest, there are simply no way to make the DMOZ concept work effectively if you do not appoint industry specific experienced editors and editalls.
