Just wondering if any CasinoMeister geeks can help me with another annoying problem with Windows 8.1?

I have extended my desktop to a modern flat-screen TV, but just can't get the resolution right.
No matter what I try, the display is too big, meaning a border of about 3%(?) is missing on all 4 sides.
e.g. I can only see the bottom 1/3 of my window's tabs at the top of the screen, and the top 1/3 of the icons at the bottom (sides are cut off too).
Tried Googling the problem, but to no avail.
The mock-up below shows pretty much what I'm seeing on my TV.
(Tried 3 different TVs - same result)

Can anyone help?

Cheers,
KK

I had the same problem when i connected my old PC to a 32 inch flatscreen TV with HDMI. I lowered the resolution some and that was the thing to do, but I guess you tried that already. :)

Since the problem is your output signal you might try do update video card drivers?

Are you using HDMI or DVI or another solution?

Hi KK, sounds like your graphics card is set to 'overscan', do you know if you have nvidia or ati graphics and do you have the full drivers installed? Intel onboard graphics might also have this option too these days... it's usually used to fix the opposite problem, IE the picture not quite filling the screen, and artificially enlarges the picture to compensate.

Also what make and model is the TV? If its not due to overscanning that will most likely be a big help.

first result on google for 'nvidia overscan' = Win 7/HDMI screen goes beyond display

take a look, apparently you can change it on a lot of tvs now as well as in the display drivers

Sorry - was not on the forum for a few days last week and missed that you had replied - thanks!

It's a new (late 2013) HP Pavilion Laptop with Windows 8.1 - and being a bit of a computer "thicky", I have no idea at all how to find out what graphics card it uses!
Under the "Device Manager - Display Adaptors" it just says "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family"

I'm connecting using an HDMI cable.

I'm getting the same problem on 2 different Technika TVs and on an LG one too - so logically (to me) that means the problem is with the output from the laptop and not with the TVs.

It's not a show-stopper and so not something I'm prepared to spend ages trying to fix - I was just hoping someone had a quick and simple solution...

Any further help much appreciated!

I use windows 8.1 and if i connect my laptop to my tv (samsung smart) i get the same result as you.If i check my graphics options (intel hd inbuilt) everything has been adjusted correctly automaticaly so nothing i can do there so i start fiddling with buttons on my remote one of them is called picture size and has various display sizes ... 16:9/4:3/zoom etc... but it also has two options called smart view 1 and 2.

All I have to do to fix my display issue is grab my remote and and press p.size and cycle through the 16.9 4.3 etc until i come to smart view this fixes it for me.Hopefully somewhere in the settings for your tv or on the remote there will be something like this.

There is also settings on your tv for the hdmi have a play about there should be something like overscan or pixel perfect sometimes 1:1 as well.

Do you have more than one HDMI port? I remember on my last TV for some reason it would only work correctly in the 2nd port..Also is your video card driver up to date?

On the TV settings find the picture mode/picture settings/aspect ratio....something like that. It is probably set to 16:9. Depending on the TV model the description will be different but you want to change this to fit to screen/ just screen/whole screen/ screen mode. Something other than a ratio like 16:9 or 14:9.

KK, you'd be surprised how many different manufacturers TVs are using the same circuits and lcd panels just in different casings so dont be surprised you see the same problem on different units..

As people have said its usually possible to sort it out with the aspect settings on the remote, 1:1 pixel mapping or PC mode is on a lot of samsung and similar nice brand tvs.

If you have up to date graphics drivers installed you should be able to follow these steps, right click the desktop, choose 'screen resolution', then click the blue advanced settings link, in the next window there should be a large tab 'Intel(R) graphics and media control panel', choose your TV in the top box then change the bottom item "scaling", change this to "customize aspect ratio" then move both sliders from 100 to say 95 and see if that is sufficient, if not go for 90 and so on...

If you don't have the Intel graphics and media tab then your missing the display drivers for your graphics card and are probably getting seriously degraded graphical performance too and maybe havent even realised it! Go to this webpage which will automatically identify your adapter and download and install the correct drivers:
