What's Ya Weather At?

Yeah people forget we’re an island surrounded by (relatively) cold seas. This means that any airmass reaches us loaded with moisture and the humidity goes through the roof. The only ‘dry’ air flow is one from the SE, given minimal track across the sea from a baking hot continent.

A 30c temperature with a high relative humidity % will feel more like mid to high 30s somewhere where the air is drier.

So yeah, we have every right to moan 🥴
Crikey, I thought you'd initially quoted me in the Covid thread! phew!

Too much effort to contribute to that thread on a regular basis…I find it better to dabble in there every so often 😛

I'd only got roped back into it because of Mack and Justin Bieber. It felt like picking old scabs whilst singing 'Baby' :p

Nope, Dunover was right, the wily git! Temperatures stuck at their traditional 32C baseline, and 'expected to peak something approaching 34C.

So nothing but hot air - but not before our Media coined a few more cringe terms, as they do for everything. I had to do a double-take upon reading some reports, but yup, they really have dubbed it super-hot FRYDAY

Yeah, provisionally 32.7c (91f) in Suffolk, so slap bang in the middle of the Met Office's 32-33c prediction. Without the media's sensationalist try-to-outdo-the-other-headlines and keep adding 1c on....

Hardly remarkable for June.

Buuuulshiiiiit! Wanna bet? Existing record is 35.6c set in Southampton in 1976. About 96f. If it hits 34c anywhere, this will be the third June in six that 34c has been reached, but overall, temperatures in low-mid 30's occur in UK summers every year. So nothing really to see here. The notable events occur when you get a week/weeks/month of temperatures where somewhere is 30+ every day. Like 2019? when 6 consecutive July days reached or exceeded 34c, including the Cambridge UK record of 38.7c.

We suffer from press imbecility in the UK where weather is concerned. The Met Office say Friday will be the hottest day of the year thus far, 32-33c, hardly unusual for June. Then the Chinese whispers begin and this becomes 33-34c, then someone else adds another 1c onto it, resulting in in bollocks like 36c being cited. It won't be. If it is, please come back to this thread with humilating abuse towards me and I will post a suitably embarrassed reply.

To compound the imbecility, we see headlines in this situation like 'London to be hotter than Athens/Algarve/Madrid/****/****' (fill as appropriate with city or location you've spotted that has a predicted temperature 1c or more lower than the London or UK forecast.)

I wouldn't mind so much if the reverse was true, so on the other 355 days of the year, daily, we would get an equally meaningless headline in the papers screaming 'MALAGA TO BE HOTTER THAN MANCHESTER TODAY!

P.S. This crescendo of 90f-plus 'heat' will last ONE day, with the inevitable 'thundery breakdown' the following day. The we can get back to vital stories about BJ's missus or Kevin Spacey's wandering hands etc.
I'm glad you got those words in the right order Mr. D.

Otherwise the forum would be discussing stories about your missus' wandering hands or Kevin Spacey's BJ's.

And the jury would be out as to which of those two would be the greater shock....

PS Probably put an erroneous apostrophe after missus, so feel free to give me a trademark Dunover-esque bollocking

Your missus is fine, it's the BJ's I take umbrage with, McG.

*I don't mean to imply your actual missus is hot and that she's an oral Mozart, so please don't beat me up and that :eek2:

Oh FFS

Bloody typical of me. If it's not whether it's its or it's, then it's whether it's no apostrophe or an apostrophe and where it's positioned.

It's like my old school report

Spelling - very good
Punctuation - fucking shite

PS I have just set a record for the use of it's in a single post.

No, in the case of missus 100% correct apostrophe. The jury is out on apostrophes in plurals i.e. when I refer to different RTP's I use it as you can see, although some say it's correct not to for abbreviation-plurals so should be RTPs.

The vagaries of English language. I mean, what other language could have a credible sentence like 'Goatwack, unlike the other posters in this thread had had, had had over fifteen replies thus far' Same word four times in a row. It's all bollocks. 🥳

Which beats "never use because because because is a conjunction", but loses to

"how much space do you want between fish and and and and and chips?"

Back to the fucking weather. Peaked here at 30.7c yesterday about 16:30. A 20:30, about now, it was 24.5c.

Today, my trusty weather station tells me peak temperature was 14.3c. It's been cloudy or pissed down all day. Right now? 9.8c.

From Majorca to Montrose in 24 bastard hours. I cannot recall such a range in 24 hours ever.:mad::mad:

After our sunny transgressions comes the lightning storm for our penance. Saddle up, it's gonna get spicy!

Bravo, very nice penmanship you got there.
I was waiting for someone to break that record, now that you have you have won a trip to the island where it all started.
On this island stands the tree that the very first pen was made from, and shortly after that penmanship was born.

Are you ready for the best day of your life?
You will learn new things about penmanship, and perhaps even learn something new about yourself.
Its all in days work if you dare take a chance and follow me to Penisland.

Our local community radio has just said we will get max 38 next weekend.
This guy is spot on and has his own weather station thingy in his garden.
East coast seems to be where it's going to be hotter than the devils piss

Ok, brace yourself for more hype, with the ever-popular 'could' and 'record-shattering' being wheeled out one last time, this season

Ready for 42C?

If it hits 42c this month in the UK I will puncture one of my own testicles.

True enough, the SE corner of the UK, a line from say west Dorset to The Wash (The Continental Angle) is where the the hottest air will cool least when it comes up from the south or south east, hence most of our record temperatures are have been recorded there. It actually did seem in 2019 July that there was a chance of 40c but low cloud took the edge off and we had to settle for 38.7c, a new UK record in Cambridge.

If you remember last June when Holland, Germany, Belgium and France set record all-time temps it didn't quite reach us, and IIRC before that freak month, the UK record temperature was around the same or even slightly higher than some other N. European countries. That was the time we had a second chance of hitting 40c.

Now wait for the press to add 1c each headline to this bollocks, until we predict Death Valley figures.

Actually not as crazy as you think. I’m an amateur meteorologist (as a hobby) and some of the weather modelling over the past week or so has been showing temperatures into the 40s Celsius for next weekend.

The latest GFS forecast today churned out a 44c max temperature. Quite a bit of concern over this on the weather forums.

Hopefully we see such values downgraded as we go through the week but 37/38c looks very possible next weekend for the SE.
