Required Individual Obesity Ratings all Americans

Hey ksech, yes, I got your pm, but haven't had a chance to look at it yet. I sure hope that the tax on benefits doesn't happen or I'm afraid I will have to drop my employer paid med. care in favor of the old emergency room routine!!

Also, I guess we are suppose to read karis little mind as to what he/she meant to say. Just read the last post and tell me WTF he/she is talking about?? I tried to write it off awhile back as language barrier, but kari seems to have very poor communication skills at the very least!! Does sweden provide state sponsored mental health care kari?? If so, do yourself (and the rest of us) a favor and seek it immediately!

I dont know....but im in the minority here. I think the new healthcare system will be great.....provided its run as the Canadians and British do it. Sorry to say but I have insurance and I hate paying out the ass for it...Im a healthy person....why are premiums so high? I can recommend SICKO a Michael Moore film to anyone who really wants to see what goes on with privatized healthcare.

I think I found it:

:D

As for socialism, please don't confuse the political system "socialism" with social programs or services that contribute to a safe, secure, or healthy way of life. The Postal Service, the Fire Department, Public Safety, Social Security, and Public Schools etc. - all fall into this category.

And as for eating healthy - personally, I am an advocate of this. I find it crucial to instill good eating habits with kids - and the best way to do this is to lead by example. I'm not perfect, but I do my best to stay physically active and eat local farmed foods - organic when possible, and keep the junk to a minimum. And honestly, it's taken much more seriously in Europe than in the States. We were in Florida recently and my kids were shocked at the number of obese people that were mulling about. Just an observance.

In my kids' school, my boy is in the fourth grade - class of about 28 kids, maybe one kid is overweight. My daughter is in the sixth grade with around thirty kids - two girls in that class could be considered overweight. Not obese mind you, but just a little heavier than average.

The point that I'm making is that the European lifestyle is much different than in the States, and I don't think people can understand this unless you walk the walk. Now please don't beat me up :p

I grew up in WV never take your kids there.....they would faint. I can count on 1 hand how many thin people I know there....its sad.

Sorry if I bothered you with my poor communication skills. But your comments about my mental issues were too much for me. You're not going to see me in this forum anymore. It was fun. Good bye.

lost2much if Kari said he had testicular cancer how canyou use the he/sshe above You just wanjt to flame cause tyou7 are not reading the posts

I think Kari was using that as an example, not indicating that HE had testicular cancer. Maybe you should also read a little closer before jumping on me.

Forum fights notwithstanding, whether or not the gummit is going to require BMI info on everyone's electronic medical records, it's apparent that one way or another there is going to be a declared "war" on fat and obesity in the future.

Currently I'm on a diet called the "1st Personal Diet" and I've lost about 45 pounds in the six weeks I've been on it. The diet is based on your blood test results and personalized for you. If you want to head off any future gummit targeting your obesity, you can try it out at

This is an observance on your part though. My husbands daughter moved to Floriday from Massachusetts. She was about 10lbs overweight, no biggie. After being in Florida for 1 year she was practically anorexic. She said she was just trying to keep up with all the other women. She said she still thought she was fat (even tho she was practically anorexic) just because of how thin the women and men were.

In my daughters class, second grade (30 kids) there is one girl who is a bit above "normal size" and 1 boy who is more than "normal size". Most of the children are average, and there are a few who are so skinny it scares me. I am looking at her class picture right now, if I knew how to put it here I would. No camera.

I did read an article and believe I posted it here months maybe a year ago about how people from France or Italy (I think) are thinner from the way they eat. They take hours to eat, and sip wine during their lunch and dinner. When we have lunch we get 1/2 an hour for lunch (working people of course) so there is no way we could do that. My friend went to Italy or France years ago and she said it took a while to get used to taking that long to eat lunch.

Just to add - lost2much was our lovely troll from yore - pacers31. After coming to realize he's been an unusally active participant of most of the closed threads lately (the ones that spiral into flame-wars), I did some checking and found he had used the same email address for a FUCK OFF email from November 2008 after he was banned for being a troll. What a nitwit (oops, I flamed him :p).

Bye lost2much. If you weren't such a troll, you wouldn't have caught my attention.

I am so sorry for starting this horrible thread. For all the intelligent discussion here was greatly undone by the disgraceful and insane attack on Sweden which by the way was my father's native country and to think I had anything to do with any of this makes me a little ill. I apologize to all of you and mostly to the swedes we have here that contribute frequently with good, informative and friendly posts. As for you Kari, before this thread even started, you tried to start something with me over calling 'football' football in another thread so it appears to me that what you want is to instigate and start havoc. Well good for you. job well done.

I think what is most fundamentally wrong with this government interference in people's weight is the availability of a list to the public.

That means employers may check you there and if in the past you were overweight, they could opt not to hire you because no one wants employees with health issues.

In that scenario it also doesn't matter whether you are fat because of an underlying disease, or whether you are sick because you are fat, or whether you are healthy as a horse.

If you are on the list, you are a risk.

I am so sorry for starting this horrible thread.

It's not horrible. A previously banned member was caught. :D

I thought at some time that lost2much was same guy as cant_get_right who numerous times tried to bait people.
But then he answered two PM:s of mine politely and I thought he wasn't a troll after that.

You really are half a swedish meatball then..:p

Not true...they are not going to be public. They are only available to licensed physicians for medical treatment. They will be part of your electronic record so that information can be obtained about you immediately from wherever you live or plan to live.

The obesity-rating regulation states that every American's electronic health record must: “Calculate body mass index. Automatically calculate and display body mass index (BMI) based on a patient’s height and weight.”

The law also requires that these electronic health records be available--with appropriate security measures--on a national exchange.

Haven't they been talking about having a national database of every American's health records for years now? This has been going on way before this bill was even introduced.

Exactly...my sister is also an RN who works in IHS and they are redesigning the program to be compliant with the law by 2014 but this integration started back years ago. It's very complex but will be well worth it as any physician can get your records with the click of a mouse. Your information is already shared with local physicians who are in the system.

Orlando Regional is leaps and bounds ahead bc they started EHR years ago but they are not available nationally.

Don't be sorry for starting this thread, it has been a darned good one, the fact there was a few bumps in the road made no significant difference in the real meat of the discussion. I know I have very much enjoyed being able to participate, especially since I don't talk casino anymore, the off topics, gives the members like myself something to participate in.

So thank you!

As for people of other countries and races, they are all people just like you and me and the majority of people here do not share the same prejudice as some. Every individual, no matter where they are from or the color of their skin has input that is welcome as far as I and I'm sure many others are concerned.

Kind of thought lost just enjoyed being antogonistic, not familiar with the Pacers s/n thought, guess I missed the fun that time.
Everytime I read some of his/her posts (mostly as the threads went on) I thought about this sketch....

Kisch, yes knew it was Horton, cute, who doesn't love Suess :D
Just the idea of an elephant in a thread about fat made me chuckle.

I think a program which shares medical information amongst the medical profession could possibly save lives. Especially where prescriptions are concerned. A centralized database would make it almost impossible for overmedication of some patients.

Ex: I knew this woman who would go from doctor to doctor until she found one who would give her a prescription for what she thought was her latest malady (thanks to one of the self diagnosis medical books). She would go to different pharmacies to have the prescriptions filled. She ended up in the ER with prescription overdose. She was taking 47 different prescriptions when all was said and done.

I truly believe, if there had been a centralized prescription database on hand, this wouldn't have happened. And the doctors may have been able to follow a pattern. And the woman may (or may not) still be alive today.

I do NOT believe that, according to the BMI, that it will equally provide help for those with serious weight issues. I am, by my doctors opinion, 15 lbs overweight. I was put on a steriod to remove fluid from around my heart, which put on 25 lbs. I've shed 10 lbs in the last 6 months ( he also told me age is a factor for losing weight also). At age 50 I'm weighing in at 140 lbs, he is going by medical records from since I was 18, where I was a pathetic 89 lbs. My BP is higher now, but finally in normal range 115/70 was my last reading, whereas 5 years ago it was terribly low (average 86/50). My cholesterol is high, but is contributed to the fact of the weigh increase and very high levels of stress (also genetic makeup).

I am not going to starve myself to try to lose the weight, but I think as jelsmith pointed out, better education on nutrition would help. I eat relatively healthy (who doesn't like "junk" food once in a while?), I can live without desserts, chips, candy, etc. My main diet consists of fruits, vegetables, fish and poultry. So, as far as I am concerned, imo, I am doing everything right and am afraid this index will "label" me as unhealthy.

I work with the public so I'm more prone to be in contact with illness than someone who works in an office. (Please, the next time you go out to eat and aren't feeling well and have the need to blow your nose, please take home/ put in the bathroom garbage, your used tissues. This is one of my main peeves. People laugh at me because I will slip on a pair of disposable gloves to remove the offending garbage from the table where people are eating. You wouldn't believe how many people do this.)

Anyways, back on track...As with everything this bill has its pro and cons. I seriously hope they fine tune the bugs as some may be unfairly labelled obese.

@felicie, the original concept of this thread was to make people aware. Do NOT feel badly about starting it. It has been informative (with a few detours along the way. And I am sorry for my part of the derail). Thank you for bringing this to light.

@RedAndi, I am with jod5413 and several others with your "YAY we win!" comment. Gave me a good chuckle.

I didn't give my av any thought when starting to post in this thread, but dang....He's soooo cute!;)

@ everyone else. I apologize for my part of the derail. I am not usually a biased person and the "baiting" and antagonastic attitude/s hit me at the wrong place/wrong time.

Well, what is the point of that? If you are fat enough to be an increased health risk, any doctor should be able to see that when you walk in the door and shouldn't need an electronic record to tell him/her that.

Every doctor's office weighs you every time you come in anyways.

The national exchange - why? What for? It is not a good thing, appropriate security measures - geez, like records with "appropriate security measures" don't get hacked every day of the week.
