Nice hit! And nope, it's always been 50x, it was never 250x (though of course if you're lucky you trigger straight up on 5 Shields and it will then re-spin to that same position, paying the 50x both before and after re-spin).

The 5 scatters pays 50x because it's a relatively likely 5 scatter trigger compared to other games, and it awards the 25 free games.

Achilles is probably the highest 5 scatter pay, with 5 Troy yielding 500x.
