I know what you mean, sometimes it seems like the more free spins, the less they pay.
A while ago I hit the free spins on First past the Post (MG), my horse won the race for 25 free spins with 4x multiplier.
In the first 10 spins I got 3 retriggers for another 75!
As the horses are also wilds, I had already 100x bet, and 90 FS left!
So I made myself comfortable to watch my balance skyrocket.
Not. The remaining 90 spins paid shite, for at least 60 spins in a row the game managed to unmatch reel 1 and 2 completely, it was just frigging unreal.
I think this was the only time I've felt so pissed off with a 130x bet win.![]()
I have found this, many times I have picked say 4 free spins with a 10x multiplier and thought dam! yet one of the 4 spins hit something big. Far bigger than occassions where I have picked the highest combination.
The newer games with the expanding wilds and mystery scatters do give you a really good chance of hitting a big one, my personal favourite is Iron man where on the missile attack bonus you can pick upto x4 with 23 spins, with an extra expanding wild plus cash prizes.
The good thing on this one is retriggers pay an additional 15 spins no matter how many spins you originally picked. Its actually advertised on the paytable that 3 triggering scatters are more likely in the bonus round. I have noticed this on a few games where this is stated.

Cleopatras Coins (Rival) gives 100 free spins with 5 scatters.
Warlock's Spell (RTG) can give 100 free spins with 3 scatters.
Had a laugh playing Cleo II last night for free. At a dollar bet, got 48 spins (for every spin, multiplier goes up by 1).. Paid $1,301.30.... the 45th spin was $12.50 x 45 - kinda cool to watch. I got some screenies of it around here somewhere...
