It's random, but crap. Only 1x multiplier, and often the additional wilds do not appear till the last couple of spins.

I agree with VWM - I call this feature "Supa-Crap Mode".
9 times out of 10 it's a load of bollox - either all the wilds are put at the wrong end or they appear too late.

I have some stats though because I've been playing this slot every day this month.

I have had the "ahem" super mode appear straight after the 10 free spins on a few occasions. Dont know if this was just pure chance.
Super mode can be so annoying, after you get couple of wilds in decent places early on,you are thinking of all the wonderful possibilities on the remaiming spins but it never happens.
As appears to be a controlled proccess it would be far better to make the feature appear say once in 500 games on average and make it live up to its name,awarding at least one wild per spin.
For all its annoying points I still think it has to be rated as one of the better MG games.
