You can fool around with it for free all you like at pogo. You can play against robots until you know the basic game, and then people and learn some more.

I would do that before even going to a pay site.

Also, there are a bunch of poker sites with a .net version. You can practice to your heart's content there for free too.

Poker never ceases to be interesting, you could give out the same hands every time and have different people sitting at the table and it would play out totally different most of the time.

    Playing on other platforms

At your local software shop, you can find a wide variety of Poker games for your PC or game console. They have very good bots, sometimes modelled after real Poker celebrities. These will give you a good feel for the game after LOTS of play.

I played World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions for the Sony PSP for a couple of weeks while I was in hospital, and found it to be quite good, with entertaining graphics and voices. There were tips offered, and helped me to retain some sanity.

Most Hoyle game software is pretty good also.

I found that the graphics at Yahoo poker suck, but especially on the limit tables you can find folks who like to play like it is real money. This will give you practice without cost, but is not really like it is for money. Still, will give you some idea of what hands will usually win after many, many weeks of play.

Mousey's idea of using the Wizard of Odds excellent site to learn to play VP is an superb one. Video Poker has higher paybacks than slots, and it is just you so you do not have to feel "foolish". Much as I love 3Dice, I do not find that I agree with many of their "hold" choices, and like the MG VP much better. Try to learn just one or two games at first, maybe Jacks or Better and Deuces Wild.

Good luck Laurie. But as said elsewhere, freeroll play and players do not really give an accurate picture of what it is like to really play for money, and often on very low stake tables, some players play like it is not real money.

Hi.....you could also check out a few poker forums such as Suited Pockets , Wass Casino ( the 2 biggest poker forums). They have lots of info such as poker sites, deposit methods etc for new players and also hold freeroll tourney's for members.I've been playing poker online for many years and only hit the slots about 1 year ago after winning 500 bucks on a 20 cent spin on CD poker. The game was take 5 million and I hit the 5 wilds one night. Many poker sites also have casinos games.Best way to learn poker is play.As others have stated you can play for free which is ok to learn the basics and also how to use the software etc.I wouldn't stay on the free tables for any great length of time cause that's not how the real money tables work.Free money tables are full of donks who don't PLAY poker as in taking the game serious. They tend to throw around play chips on bad hands etc just hoping to luck out .Most sites have low limit tables like penny tables and also hold freerolls.Poker can be fun but usually the games are a bit slow. When you join a forum you can download poker rooms from the site which sometimes gives you benifits as bigger deposit bonus .Also if you do have a prob with a site they can help.Anyways good luck and maybe we see ya on the felt someday

If you mean you want to play poker at a poker site and not a casino, i suggest you go to Hutchinson Point System and read the article, it is for beginners and intermediate poker players. Just put Hutchinson Points System in your browser i.e. Google etc and it will come up.

If you mean Casino poker, your on your own, as I will not play that, it is just luck of the draw.

Jasminebed had a great suggestion, I didn't even think of that. Matter of fact, I have at least 2 cd's of poker software. One is Chris Moneymaker's and I'm not sure what the other is. I'll drop them in the mail to you if you want to PM me your address. I don't use them anymore.
