The German Weather Service said the storm was the strongest to hit the country since 1999. The highest winds were felt in the southern state of Bavaria, where gusts of up to 126 mph were recorded.

Schools around much of the country, which had closed early on Thursday, resumed classes, though those in Bavaria and parts of Hesse and Lower Saxony remained shut down, largely because of problems transporting students.

This was the worst storm in 17 years to hit England and Wales.
In all, 13 people were killed due mainly to the effects of strong winds. Some parts of Southern England are still without power - a privilege normally reserved for Northern England & Scotland during bad weather.
Much of Europe was also affected. Structural damage was extensive, and worse storms are only seen as far back as 1987, when we had the "hurricane" over souteastern England and France. There was also a severe frontal squall sometime around 1990/91, and it is this that the press are probably referring to in "worst for 17 years".

There may be good news for Pinababy and others, as the weather pattern locked in for much of the early part of the Winter has been given a damn good kick up the jetstream, with forecasts of much colder weather for the UK and Europe, Bryan may even see snow at last! The cold air over the Eastern US seems to have been "used up" by these weather systems, and milder air is replacing it, this may be the kick needed to shift those Ice Storms.

I saw a clip of a airliner taking off over there in ,Austria I bieleve they said.

I WOULD NOT WANT TO HAVE BEEN ON THAT!!!! It came off the ground and crabwalked right away.. must have been about 10 20 deg. Almost made me barf watching it!

Some strange weather. Here in Phoenix we are having Tempetures below freezing, and thats not normal for Phoenix. I just wish the days it rained was on the days it was below freezing so we could see some snow!
