WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bill to ban Internet gambling is facing some opposition in the U.S. Senate and will not come up for a vote before the chamber takes its August recess, an aide to the U.S. Senate majority leader said on Thursday.

Backers of the legislation had hoped to push it through the Senate quickly this month following the arrest in the United States of David Carruthers, the chief executive of BETonSPORTS, on charges of racketeering and conspiracy.

Carruthers is scheduled to appear at a hearing in U.S. district court in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday to determine if he must remain in jail until his trial.

However, an aide to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said that lawmakers were still working on the bill and would not be able to hold a floor vote before the Senate recesses for its August vacation.

The Senate bill is virtually identical to legislation overwhelmingly approved earlier in July by the U.S. House of Representatives. It would prohibit most forms of Internet gambling and make it illegal for banks and credit card companies to make payments to online gambling sites.

The Republican-backed bill has been criticized by some as an election-year appeal to the party's conservative base.

Supporters of a crackdown on Internet gambling say legislation is needed to clarify that a 1961 federal law banning sports betting also covers an array of online gambling.

But the law isn't likely to pass.

Midterm elections take place on 7 November 2006. According to the published
schedule for the 109th Congress (Congress being the House and the Senate),
summer recess will take place from August 7 to September 4 for the Senate
(31 July to 4 September for the House). The Senate and House reconvene on 5
September 2006, at which point both chambers will need to act quickly if
they intend to agree on what will be in the final version (that is, if the
Senate has already voted on the bill but made its own changes from the
version passed in the House on July 11).


Congress¹ target adjournment date is 6 October 2006, approximately one month
before the midterm elections. If members of Congress intend to put real
pressure on the President to make an affirmative action to either sign or
veto the bill, they will, therefore, need to pass a final version in both
houses by Friday 22 September 2006 (10 business days before 6 October) or
Tuesday 26 September 2006 (10 actual days before 6 October). Otherwise,
President Bush may allow the bill to die after Congress adjourns on the
sixth without taking any action. Alternatively, the adjournment date may be
changed by House and Senate leaders. Ultimately, any veto handed down by
President Bush while Congress is in session must be overridden by a
two-thirds majority in both chambers.

Well....our politicians may seem goofy and 'out of touch' at times....but at least with this bill....they understand how ridiculous and hypocritical it is and are doing the right thing.

I'm having problems getting to www.32red.com and www.888.com. It keeps going to google. Is this my ISP or do I have a virus or something. i can get to www.bowmans.com and most of the Carribbean books but not to the first two. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?
