I agree, I think it is used as a fall back for the casino when convenient and to me this is bad business of underhanded tactics.
I have had many a dormant account for more than 6 months and have never had any of them closed with the exception of a couple of
MG's.
May have happened with others I used to play at that packed up and left the US market, but I don't know as I never received notification from them either. So you can't rely on them giving notice an account has been closed due to non activity.
I think this should be something that should be added to the Accredited rules for casinos, that they should have a multiple player account block, to be accredited.
And I hear you on the trust thing, the day I lost total trust to play online, was the day I finally quit.
However from what I have been reading regarding chargebacks, that's one thing a player doesn't want to do as you can be black balled from all casinos, so this is never a good solution.
