Visa/Mastercard - debit fraud

As there are ongoing issues with credit/debit cards I should mention that a visa debit card that I used only for online casino transactions was used to purchase over �1000 of retail goods.
Someone, somewhere stole my details. I only ever used this card at a few casino`s over the past 12 months.
I have been refunded the money by my bank as it was clearly fraud. The transactions were in $ converted to �`s.
Those of you will say I should use a web wallet etc - however the fact remains somebody linked to a casino was involved in this theft.
I will not name the casino`s I used to play at - that would be unfair as I have no proof to identify any of them - perhaps if anyone has experienced a similar problem they could send me a private message.
I have now completely stopped all play at casino`s - cannot trust anyone. Its a shame as I did enjoy the slots.
I hope this never happens to anybody else

All very well, but then we get casinos like Rushmore and Ladbrokes that DISQUALIFY web wallet deposits from most, if not all, regular promotions. These casinos are actively pressurising players into using credit or debit cards instead of web wallets by offering much better deals for these methods. If a SHOP were selling you a TV, and asked �400 for one payment method, but only �300 for another - which would be the main influence on your choice of payment method, price of goods, or perceived safety of payment method.

Web wallets are NOT necessarily safer either, because they may be linked to a card or bank account which is automatically debited if the transaction cannot be funded from funds in the web wallet.

Credit cards (at least in the UK) are safer than most debit cards, since there is additional protection under the consumer credit act, rather than relying on the good will of your bank, as might be the case with debit cards. VISA debit cards may also be covered under a scheme run by VISA, which allows the recovery of fraudulent transactions, as well as some protection against rogue retailers.

Using a card solely for casinos is a good idea, since it limits any damage caused by a leakage of information. It also (as in this case) makes it easier to spot where the leak came from.

I agree having one card seperate from your day to day banking is an excellent idea. Also if you must use a credit card, make sure you have one with a sensible credit limit. In the UK we also have Solo/Visa Electron cards, these can be useful for gambling as the only money that can be spent is what is available. Also with these they are instant deposit and withdrawable.
Big downside as VWM says is that you are not as protected as with credit cards.

Trust is a major factor when playing online. So I can fully understand your decision not to deposit any further. If this happened to me then I would do exactly the same, perhaps even consider UKash as a drastic alternative. Other than that I would stick to cash and gamble the old fashioned way at the bookies. As there is NO risk.

I won't name the casino at this point, but I made a deposit last night and it showed up on my online statement as being used at an online clothing store....

Aren`t VISA credit and debit cards protected with extra username and password which you have to enter on VISA verification site? Site which is exclusively opened in browser, not in cashier. IF you have one of those, I do, either casino installed keylogger or they got your verification password and username by some other method.

Hiya: How did you find out, A. it was used, and B. where at? Also, how many days had passed between them using it, and you finding out about it?

I ask because of this. It could have also been someone between you and the Casino. ie, the money service profider. But what if instead of spending it, that had bet it at the Casino, and then Won, changed your details, and had a check sent to them? or, Had used it, and Lost ad said Oh well?

This would have forced you to do the unspeakable, "CB" word, and thus been banned from your service provider, and the Casino. Just think if someone only plays once in a while, and weeks later were to notice this had happened. I guess we now need to, Always check our bank/visa balances even if not using them regulary.

I'd suggest you not to use standard Visa cards with magnetic stripe, but use EMV-cards with microchip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMV
But I'm not sure whether you could deposit into online casino using these cards...

I got stung by Click2Pay, one of their staff must have nicked my details considering how 'secure' it is. The Casino in question were very good, obviously had an influx of stolen C2P accounts and refunded the money immediately, but I disagree that web wallets are safer. Visa and Mastercard are enforcing very harsh rules on these large corporations who process transactions through their own servers. Security shouldn't be an issue since the CVV2 number of a card is NEVER stored and anyone below senior manager level should see ****'s for the middle 8 digits of a card.

This is why you shouldn't play at mickey mouse Casino's. The second anywhere asks for my password as proof as identity, I close the account. No-one should have access to my password, not even directors of a company.

He's probably gone now but is this a U.S. bank debit card for special gambling acct. or prepaid debit card? Did you have to file a fraud claim and how fast did your bank cover it? I don't see how a casino employee could get all your pins, passwords, phone codes I mean the crap I had to go thru today to activate a new card and geez had to change things because I couldn't spell the name of my elementary school exactly like I had originally. It's not easy and if my bank agreed to cover it, I'd know it's time to put my boots on.
