Think the best idea is let it run for a while and see what the targets are
This is part of the problem. Which "knockout" score is no longer worth chasing due to the very low chance of beating it compared to the risk of piling in with ever more €20 contributions to MGS's coffers.
Loaded would probably have been a better game for this event, due to it being higher variance, and it being less predictable what score would be considered an "unbeatable knockout" by most players.
I have found it very hard to get a good score on this game because of the low variance, generally, you are picking up sets of idols, and poor paying free spin rounds. Even 5 Lara's pays only 2500 coins at max bet, and is NOT multiplied by a wild.
There are some pretty rare combo's though, get one of these in the first round, and it is definitely worth going all the way. Other times, it is a hard call how far past 9000 coins in the first round is worth playing on with, and which is worth abandoning.
Of these rare combos, there is the 4 wilds for 10,000 coins (30,000 in free spins). It is also possible to get the 5 Lara's on 2 winlines at once (using a wild), which pays 5000 coins (15000 in free spins).
Because of the number of players involved, it is likely that there will be first rounds including these kinds of hits, which players will continue with.
I have had a complete "knockout" score only once - 5 scatters, but sadly only in a $60 freeroll
It may even be worth holding back in the first few days, to see how the scores develop, before piling in, only to see your once great score pushed further and further down.
Mathematicians could probably calculate a "perfect strategy" for this event based on the game, coins allowed, and number of players. There would have to be a few assumtions, and you would have to disregard human nature, or the "chase" syndrome where deep pocketed players would continue to chase all the way through the 999 rebuys.
