A fine line

A FINE LINE

Has Lazer Wager gone too far with disaster oriented marketing?

There's often a fine line between current events-based marketing initiatives and being perceived to exploit the misfortune of others, and a press release from the recently launched sportsbetting, casino and poker website Lazer Wager.com this week tested that boundary.

Owned by Trailhead SA and managed by former staff from Bet On Sports and Nine.com recruited by its British owners, Lazer Wager offered up a $10 000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of those who may have started the calamitous fires that have ravaged California.

Whilst that could have been applauded as public spirited had the company contributed the cash to Governor Schwartzenegger's initiative to hunt down those responsible, the company's next move can only be viewed as callous exploitation of a disaster in which people have lost their lives.

"Additionally LazerWager is giving each displaced [Californian] resident $15 to play in our casino," the company stated in a press release, crossing the line in a serious error of judgement in our opinion.

Aye yi yi... when will they learn?

And how are people supposed to "collect" that $15 anyway? I can see it now - just fax in a scanned copy of your drivers license along with either:
(a) a copy of your insurance policy, ACORD-1 form, and claim check; or
(b) a notarized letter from Arnold Schwarzenegger stating that your house has burned to the ground

And since your computer probably burned as well, please make sure you don't violate the "one account per physical and/or IP address" rule by using a public computer to get in touch with us.

It looks like Virtual's September 11 promotion will face some competition for the "Most Tasteless Promotion of 2007" prize.

Virtual wins by a short head. Its promotion is on a bigger scale and easier to claim while the one by Lazer is more recent.

I just hope players see the folly of their ways and abandon them.
