Here's some info I could share with you guys on Wire Transfer and fees and etc.
Wire Transfer usually is done via a simple system of messages. But the computers connected are not of a centralized system. Nobody is allowed to control the world's banking system. They will all have to go through from 1 bank to another and etc.
If your bank has ties or connections with the other bank, then your wire transfer will be done relatively quickly. Everything should be done within a day or 2 at most (if it's related banks). If not, all Wire Transfers will have to go through an "Intermediatary Bank" in order to reach your bank. Certain smaller banks do not have that many links and thus will use other banks to reach your bank.
Example ABC Bank (a local bank of a certain town) might not be connected to XYZ Casino's Bank. So, in order for XYZ Casino's Bank to send you a wire transfer, it will have to go through another bigger bank and that bigger bank will only credit your bank and then your bank to you. If you know banks good enough, they are always on the WINNING side and never on the losing side. Thus the small work for them in the middle usually will cost you some money (usually $10-$30).
By mentioning bigger banks, I mean banks like JP Morgan, CitiBank, Wells Fargo and etc. Those are HUGE banks compared to a local bank at a local town. Those banks are usually used as a middle man for Wire Transfer.
That's how money is lost along the way.
But then again, everyone has the option of paying the fees for the middleman cost themselves or making the receiver pay the cost. Usually (by practice), the receiver will be paying for the fees and thus it's a common practice but if you really want a certain party to receive $1000, you need to mention to your bank that you will be paying all the Intermeadiatary Fees and that you would like the receiving party to get exactly $1000 as the amount. That way, your bank will charge you the fees instead of the receiver.
Usually receiving a Wire Transfer does not cost anything as they are exactly like depositing CASH but banks are known to charge a small amount (usually between $5 - $30) for receiving a Wire Transfer. I have NEVER heard of any bank or any financial institution at all to charge a PERCENTAGE as a fee for Wire Transfer. If they do, it's exactly like saying that they will be charging you a certain percentage for depositing CASH to the bank. If this is really the case, please GET AWAY FROM THAT BANK IMMEDIATELY!!!
I really hope that this small explanation tells you a little more about Wire Transfer, their process and the fees involved.
If you have any further questions, I'll try my best to answer them as best I could. Thanks!
You win some, you lose some... nobody can win it all.
