Some maths
I have a question concerning the Jacks or Better video poker from Chartwell (the regular one, not the zero lounge one at Betfair, we will see why later):
When we take a look at the payout table, we see that the numbers are logical except the Royal Flush when played with 5 coins. The payout should be 1.250 (250 X 5) but it's 4.000. That mean that people playing with 5 coins have a higher edge than people playing with less coins....it shouldn't be like that, am I wrong ? Now, if we check the Zero Jacks or Better payouts (at Betfair), we see that all the numbers are the same compared to the normal JoB except the Royal Flush payouts. On normal JoB, Royal Flush pays 250, 500, 750, 1000 and 4000. On the Zero JoB, it pays 976, 1952, 2928, 3904 and 4.880. Having the Zero JoB payout table which represent 100% redistribution and the normal JoB payout table, could somebody calculate for us the redistribution % for the normal JoB for 1, 2, 3, 4 (it should be the same for less than 5 coins) and 5 coins played (it should be much higher) ? |

This is standard on all variations of video poker to my knowledge. You will only get the maximum return betting the max, its basically a bonus to entice you to do just that. The Betfair JoB is the first version of VP I have seen that doesn't penalise you for only betting 1-4 coins.
You see it on most 3 wheel slots aswell, 1 coin pays a 1000, 2 coins pay 2500 or whatever all other wins are proportional to coins bet. |

Good marketing ploy. The house edge isn't nearly as important as the fact some gamblers often gamble until the bankroll runs out.

That wouldnt actually have any effect in the long run, guess they must just be gaining from when people dont do perfect play.

You are right BubbleG, I've never noticed it before. Concerning the zero roulette (without zero), the problem is that they've also changed the limits of he table which make it impossible to use a strategy on it. If you take the normal roulette on Betfair you have a min of 1 € and a maximum of 100€ bet at the table (X100 between the min and the max bets). Straight up bet: min 1€ and max 5€ (X5 between min and max bets) Even or Odd bet: min 1€ and max 90€ (X90 between min and max bets) On the zero roulette you have a min of 2 € and a maximum of 50€ bet at the table (X25 between the min and the max bets...the difference between the min and the max bets have been divided by 4, that's very bad !). Straight up bet: min 2€ and max 5€ (X2.5...the difference between the min and the max bets have been divided by 2) Even or Odd bet: min 5€ and max 10€ (X2...that is the worth, the difference between max and min bets have been divided by 45) It is clearly done to avoid players using a strategy because you always bet on Red or Black, Even or Odd (I won't explain why here it would be to long), it's called "simple chance" in french (a 50/50 probability), when you want to implement a strategy and on a french or european roulette, the zero gives a higher edge to the house. A roulette without zero would have been really interesting for the player, without him having a higher edge than the house. But with the "zero roulette" table limits, Betfair take back all the advantage they give to the player. Personally, if I had to choose between the "zero roulette" and the normal one, I would take the normal one. Last edited by Alexandre; 19th October 2006 at 06:32 PM. |
