Massachusetts Moves Closer To Legalizing Casino Gambling

After several years of wrangling, Massachusetts is poised to legalize casino gambling.

The state is expected to authorize the development of three casinos in central, western and southeastern Massachusetts under a bill making its way through the state Senate.

Gaming licenses are expected to be awarded as part of a competitive auction process.
"We believe our focus should be revenue recapture," Gregory Bialecki, Massachusetts' secretary of housing and economic development, told the state's economic development committee last month. "This means that whatever is built should seek to be equal to or better than the gaming and leisure options available in other New England states, particularly in Connecticut."
"Gaming … is enjoyed by over a million Massachusetts residents every year in Connecticut and other New England states. Any well-crafted proposal would make those entertainment options available here in Massachusetts," he said. "The money that our residents are now spending in Connecticut and Rhode Island would then be spent here in Massachusetts."
